Stepping into Clementine's, you instinctively know you’re in good hands. Without a moment’s doubt, anyone willing to revamp their personal style would gladly hand over their wardrobe to shop owner, Christina McDowell. Christina possesses an innate elegance so many dream of, and has a way of wearing clothes just so. It’s easy to see why she has had a successful career in the fashion world.
“Versatility and longevity are key to every wardrobe,” notes Christina. “I’m helping customers find the essential pieces — the backbone — to their look.” At Clementine's, the focus is on modern classics and timeless collections rather than fast fashions that change with the seasons. “I don't dress to trends,” Christina points out. “I source, edit and curate beautiful pieces that will stand the test of time.”
Opening up a shop of her own was a long time coming for Christina. Following a 10-plus year stint as an Image Consultant and Spokesperson at Holt Renfrew — arguably the top designer shopping locale in Canada — Christina was ready to start her own luxury fashion business. Despite her eagerness to embrace a new chapter, Christina wasn’t about to snap up any old spot; she knew exactly where she wanted to be, as it’s all about location, location, location!
At Holts, the majority of Christina’s clients shared her own demographic qualities, with a large portion residing in the Rosedale neighbourhood. The budding entrepreneur was set on procuring a space within walking distance of the Summerhill/Rosedale neighbourhoods and the Yonge subway line. Fortunately, her determination led her to a storefront mere steps away from Summerhill station.
Inside, the shop is elegant and feminine. Walls are outfitted with rotating art installations, that are for sale. The central lounge area is host to a living room set, eye-catching blush-coloured, feather lamps from Paris, and a TV with the most recent fashion shows on a loop. This is where Christina conducts one-on-one consultations for her Image Consulting services. And, of course, a well-curated selection of garments adorn racks dotted throughout the space. A bevy of boldfaced names — Gucci, Stella McCartney, Oscar de la Renta, Helmut Lang — wink from the items’ tags.
Christina has always had a client demographic that ranges in age — whether it’s her daughter Kelly’s demographic, or her own. Kelly, as Director of Operations, holds the business reins at Clementine’s. Christina knows her labels inside out and is an expert in dressing to body type and proportion. As such, she has earned her clients’ trust; they know her goal is to make sure they look great and feel great. With the garments all in “like new” condition — something Christina insists upon — Clementine’s truly is luxe shopping done right.
Helping her clients find their best selves is Christina’s M.O. After all, there's a reason why it’s called retail therapy.
