Even pulling into the parking lot outside Edelweiss Village feels like taking a quick trip to a real European market. The exterior of the building has enough Bavarian detailing to stick out in a particularly busy retail block of 20th Avenue Northwest. Inside, the large building is full of European treasures, both in the form of imported giftware and food items.
With its cuckoo clocks, deli counter and attentive staff, there’s something very old-school about Edelweiss Village. The business was established as a small European-style deli that opened in Brentwood Mall back in the early '60s. Current owners Stan and Marianne Kundert’s connection to the store dates back to 1982, when Marianne’s parents bought the original shop. In 1987, they moved to a larger space within Brentwood Mall and added a café. Stan and Marianne took over the business and brought in some giftware to complement the foodstuffs, changing the name to Edelweiss Imports in 1998. Realizing that they needed more room to realize their vision of building a European market, they moved into their current digs in 2000 to accommodate their growing inventory and customer base.
A European alpine flower, edelweiss is a symbol of love and devotion. And Kaffee Stubbe in Edelweiss Village serves a slice of Vienna cheesecake that is pure amore. Created by Capitol Hill bakery, the scrumptious dessert is available with a dusting of chocolate or sugar. Made to order, patrons are asked to make requests for full cakes two days in advance.
This Capitol Hill Euro-grocer-market naturally carries a wide range of imported cheeses. The delectable dairy lineup includes cave-aged Gruyere, red-wine-bathed Drunken Goat, jalapeño Havarti, Limburger and Royalty Kroelewski.
