In 2009, chef Rick Gao immigrated to Canada from Beijing and followed a classmate all the way to Calgary. With a passion for the art of sushi, he developed his technique at several restaurants throughout the city and pursued his career at Hana Sushi in Calgary's trendy Mission neighbourhood – perfecting his skills under the tutelage of Japanese chef Matsumoto, who opened the restaurant in 1998.

Today, Rick is the proud owner of Hana Sushi, continuing to create inspired recipes to offer the freshest sushi available on land, infused with the essence of traditional Japanese cooking and sushi-making. “I’ve tried to keep it 100 per cent authentic, but I’ve enhanced the menu by bringing in my own ideas,” Rick says. “The sushi menu now is about two times as large as it used to be, with more house specialty rolls. But I’m very strict about the flavour and presentation – it’s a very slow process to add dishes to the menu.”

Eat here!

I am amazed at how consistently fresh and delectable the sushi is at Hana. I've eaten at a lot of different sushi restaurants all over the world but there's something about Hana sushi that's worth coming back to. Their staff is always pleasant and the service is phenomenal. I can't say enough good things about Hana. I would recommend them without hesitation.
