Les Jaworski loves to host a good party but he jokes that his house just wasn’t big enough. Enter Kawa Espresso Bar. Pronounced ka’-va, which is Polish for coffee, Les and his wife Ottilia opened their café in 2008 to extend their hospitality further and to accommodate their passion for great coffee, food, music and art. But unlike many Calgary coffee houses, Kawa also serves up a solid wine list as well as an exceptional craft beer list to go with the entertainment. “This is not a new concept,” explains Ottilia. She says they fashioned Kawa after the cafés they grew up with in Europe, where it’s the norm to get a cup of espresso and a glass of wine or beer at the same venue.

This coffee is a light roast, low acid, stomach friendly Arabica coffee. The unique monsooning process was discovered when shipping beans from India to European ports in wooden ships; the humidity would be absorbed by the beans producing this unique flavor and low acidity.

A great little spot. I love thee location for getting some work done, and the coffee is pretty decent as well. Staff have been a little hit or miss, but don!t let it keep you from dropping in for a caffeine buzz.

More of a coffee shop than a restaurant or bar, Kawa offers a surprisingly extensive selection of beers for those not looking for a caffeine jolt. There are several dozen different bottles from around the world up for grabs, including some hard-to-find flavoured beers, sours, and local offerings.
