Meet the owner

Since 1991, Earth’s General Store has been selling environmentally friendly products to the community. The original shop was a small, modest location on Whyte Avenue, offering an assortment of products from candles to books to household cleaning supplies and toiletries. The shop has since grown – literally – into a much larger location offering organic food further down Whyte Avenue.

In 2014, owner Michael Kalmanovitch opened a second location, focusing even further on food in the downtown core. But, throughout it all, the store’s mandate has been the same. “I believe we should consume less, consume wisely, consume fairly, consume locally and love lots more,” says Michael. “Because, I think if we follow those five little things, we will lessen our impact on the environment, and also help those that are struggling in other countries through fair trade and organic products.”

Organic fruits, vegan substitutes and beeswax candles are just some of the specialty items occupying the shelves of this local store. The south side location has a whole area devoted to books, and a substantial dried foods section. Meanwhile, the downtown one has a deli and fridges full of grocery items. Both, however, carry fair trade items in the form of chocolate, coffee and tea, to name a few.

Jelly Parrot Trash Crafts notebooks are made from recycled paper – the craftsman behind them folds the paper so you only see the blank side. The notebook coils are generally made from old coat hangers. The covers are made from cereal boxes and old records. They look so cool you would never know they’re made from stuff you have lying around your own house.
