Could have been better

I agree with the other reviewer - Sean is great and certainly knows how to make you feel happy to be here. The food here is beautifully presented, but it's not all that inventive. I had a mushroom scone drizzled in creme sauce and topped with a huge mound of deep fried yam slivers. Beautiful to look at, but the taste wasn't all that exciting. If I'm going to have wild mushrooms I want them to taste like wild mushrooms - not be drowned out by a heavy, heavy sauce.

A special night....fabulous food

We recently visited Minnoz dining room for my spouse's birthday. We had heard the restaurant had been renovated in the past year and a few friends had told us the food was excellent. We don't get downtown that often, but thought we'd give it a try for my husband's birthday. Glad we did. The room was beautiful, a very West Coast feel, not at all what we expected in a hotel restaurant. We had the most delightful server named Sean who was happy to recommend many of his favourites on the menu. It was nice to see so much fresh local seafood on the menu. We started off our night with some martinis, we had never tried Hendricks gin in a martini and now we probably won't order any other gin again. We chose mussels, a tian of crab and avocado and two scallop salads as our starters and they did not disappoint. When it came time to choose our mains, our server was a wealth of information. He recommended the Rack of Lamb which my husband decided to order. I had the Halibut and our friends tried the Bouilabaisse and the Filet Mignon. The timing between courses could not have been better. Our server recommended the Burrowing Owl Cabernet Sauvignon which was not on their wine list, but rather a reserve for guests who are looking for something special. Delicious! Our meals were all cooked perfectly. My husband loves his lamb rare, and more often than not it comes over-cooked. On this evening, it was exactly to his liking...Happy Birthday to him. My halibut was to die for, rich and cooked just right. Our friends must have enjoyed their dinners as their plates were clean when the server came to clear. We shared desserts, the creme brulee was our favourite of the two. I could taste the saffron and vanilla and it was just the right size after such a grand meal. The best part is we weren't overly full from gigantic portions like so many places serve these days. I felt satisfied. I prefer to experience different flavours and savour the richness of quality made food than be overwhelmed by large portions of mediocre food. This was a very pleasant experience and we will be back. We will probably ask for Sean's service again.
