Meet the owner

Since 2000, Daniel Mekonnen has been proudly sharing his Ethiopian cuisine and culture with Vancouver residents at Harambe Ethiopian Restaurant. Before moving to Canada, Daniel worked in his family’s restaurant in Ethiopia. That is where he perfected the authentic meals that satisfy both Vancouverites and customers from across the Lower Mainland who make special trips to culturally rich Commercial Drive just to enjoy the home-cooked goodness and friendly ambiance of Harambe.

Offering a taste of Ethiopia in Vancouver, the restaurant takes its name from the Swahili word meaning “all pull together.” With dishes prepared daily by the experienced team in the kitchen using authentic organic spices from home, you’ll soon discover that Ethiopia's food and the dining experience are as unique as the country itself.

In addition to offering Vancouverites a traditional Ethiopian culinary experience, Harambe also serves as an Ethiopian art gallery. Customers can purchase the original works of art displayed on the walls of the restaurant or order posters and limited editions on canvas.

Fun night out with great food!

Ethiopian food in general makes for a fun, social evening out! It is served in large platters great for sharing. The platter consists of their traditional bread... a salty crepe type thing with piles of different dishes sprinkled throughout. You grab the bread and scoop the saucy dish with your hand. Good times! Harambe does Ethiopian justice! Nice relaxed atmosphere and very authentic and tasty food! It is a total mom and pop shop so be prepared to spend some time there as mom is cooking for the whole restaurant on her small kitchen stove and pop is serving the whole restaurant. Well worth it!

A favourite haunt on the Drive, Harambe is warm, friendly and delicious. Arrange your dining group at carved wood chairs around low wooden tables for maximum communal dining, as the Ethiopians do so well. Using your hands, dig in with warm, rolled pieces of injera to wot, tibs, gored gored (marinated cubed beef), spinach, cabbage and more. Consider the chef’s platter — a veritable tour of the cuisine that will most likely leave you with tomorrow’s lunch.
