Finding a local hangout spot that makes you feel at home and gives you a real sense of community can sometimes be tricky in a big city. With endless drinking and dining options to choose from, a place needs to stand out amongst the crowd. At Toby’s Pub & Grill they’ve managed to carve out their niche on the lower end of Commercial Drive and keep people coming back. Their location just a couple of blocks from the Broadway SkyTrain station, one of the city’s major transportation hubs, means that this dark-wooded, high-ceilinged pub draws in all types of people.
“It’s totally diverse. We get a little bit of everybody. We get college and university kids, the lawyers from across the way, construction workers just getting off work and music lovers coming to see their favourite local band,” explains assistant general manager Shelly Copan.
Regardless of the mixed crowd, Shelly says the way the high-top tables are set up allows for interaction and says she’s watched many friendships blossom in the pub. She thinks that having a good mix of entertainment on any given night, like hockey games, UFC fights and live bands, gives customers plenty to chat about.
“We get a great crowd in for hockey and UFC nights. People moving around to different tables to debate over scores and make friendly bets,” she recalls. “It’s really cool to watch the interaction and watch people become friends.”
