We drove to St Jacobs yesterday, reminiscing about the great buffet of the Stone Crock and decided to eat there. What a let down. The salad bar was not remarkable, not even the third of itself (in the earlier day) the hot buffet was completely bland, even the chicken tasted like boiled chicken thrown on the grill to give it color. The pork schnitzel was so bland, it was unrecognizable. 2 items were okay, pasta with broccoli and cheese and the sausage. For desert, we ate the berry cobbler, good but less sugar and a squirt of lemon juice will improve the dish, as for the bread pudding, more than ordinary, mine is tastier. The service was extremely slow,I do not want to blame the staff only 2 waitstaff on a Friday at 4:30pm, no one at the front desk when we came in, we waited for sometime and decided to show your faces in the dining area, finally someone directed us to a table. If you have a sign saying "wait to be seated" please have somebody available to seat the customers. Now the worst for me, dishes which was not perfectly clean, that horrible sensation of little food particle adhering to the dishes coming out of the dishwasher, that was the case, last night. The coffee is still great. It was the last time we will go there for diner, we think that $50.00+ is to much for our experience.
I've been here several times with good experiences. Over the labor day weekend I was there with my parents. The entire meal we were fighting flies off. It was not the odd fly, it was a fly every 15-30 seconds buzzing around that needed shooed away. Asked for fly swatter, but they had none. Seriously need to deal with this infestation.
I went there for lunch and to pick up some treats for later (a peach pie and some butter tarts). The food wasn't very good...far too salty. And the coffee was pretty lousy too. The treats, however, were excellent. So, I recommend that you stick to buying baked goods and having them at home for dessert. Don't bother with lunch.
My husband and I went for the dinner buffet tonight. The selection isn't huge but the quality was great. The only thing we steered clear of were the cooked veggies which looked like frozen. Salad bar was great (can't beat their potato salad!) and the hot food was home cooked and very tasty. At $18.99 a person we thought it very good value especially as the delicious desserts were included. We left very full and happy and we will return!
We had a disappointing lunch time Friday October 8 at the Stone Crock. My wife has Celiac disease (gluten allergy). While the rest of us ate lunch buffet, the only thing suitable thing for her was Caesar Salad with no croutons. When it came the waitress questioned whether she had the right salad - it was very small. Yes, my wife had ordered the standard size Caesar. The price was 8.99. My wife mentioned in a nice tone that while we live in Toronto, we have never had such a small salad for such a big price. The waitress was rude in her response and for the balance of the meal ignored us!!!!!My wife ordered coffee with her meal and never got it. The salad had brown pieces in it. Stone crock used to be good but those days are long gone.
Smallest chicken casaer I have seen as an entree, served almost like an appetizer. The bacon - 'bacon bits' rock hard pellets, with a smattering of shredded chicken on top and the amount of romaine pitiful. The appetizer mini cheese, garlic loaf was flavorful but very doughy. The price $13 salad $6 bread was overpriced for the quality. However, our waitress was polite and friendly and she received a good tip for this, not her fault the food was below average. Why restaraunts like this want to take a hit and a miss with customers is beyond me. Will not return nor recommend.
Was a great restaurant to visit while up north. Staff was friendly and the buffet was well maintained and the salad bar was to die for. love the traditional dishes like the beets, and cheesball. The cabbage rolls were to die for, and awesome to see that this restaurant uses REAL potatoes for their mashed potatoes and makes their sauces, cabbage rolls, etc all from scratch, will definatly be back next year!
Server was polite enough but EXTREMELY slow to take our order and to bring our drinks - and we weren't even there during the buffet so it wasn't busy. The food was BEYOND HORRIBLE! I ordered roasted turkey and gravy on a bun - maybe I'm presumptuous but wouldn't you expect that the sandwich be hot and the gravy to be served over the turkey? Apparently, they think it's a good idea to put about 2 oz of shredded turkey in the center of a bun and just dip the top half of the bun in gravy. They obviously assembled the sandwich long before the side of fries was cooked because the gravy was stone cold and had developed a skin! So, imagine a soggy bun with a cold layer of gravy stuck to the top and tiny bits of dry and tasteless turkey in the middle! I decided to skip the bun entirely and just ate the tiny bit of cold, dry and bland turkey. If we weren't so famished and if we hadn't already waited so long for service, this food would have gone back to the kitchen. The staff is certainly nice enough but the decor is dark and depressing. I would never come here again and would never recommend this place to anyone.
Rotten experience This meal was so hideous it would have scared Stephen King. Everything was processed, canned, frozen, dry, and tasteles. Our schnitzel had the consistency of shoe leather dipped in breac crumbs and cooked by a blow torch. Our daughter could find nothing she enjoyed on the buffet, and our son didn't even eat his fries. That's as bad as it gets. It was overpriced, overcooked, and tasteless. After finishing, went home and raided the fridge. It does't get much worse.
My husband and I had the Saturday dinner buffet and were very disappointed. Not only were the choices very limited on the hot and cold tables but they were bland and unappetizing. We will not visit again.
My wife and I came for our 25th wedding anniversary two weeks ago. We were appalled at how dried-out and unappetizing the buffet looked. We were so disappointed that we will never be back. It is shocking to us how far this family restaurant which was once a family favourite of ours has fallen.
Although I've visited this restaurant for many years, I can honestly say that this visit was a total disappointment - the worst food I have ever tasted in ANY restaurant - ever! None of the food was fresh- the full buffet - totally disgusting - nor the salad bar (which had a very limited selection). I am very surprised at this.
The rudest and most inexplicable service ever had at a restaurant.
My husband and I have been patrons for many years, but no longer. Tonite was the kicker when we had a very rude waitress. She ignored us, didn't ask how the meal was, glared at me every time she passed the table, the kitchen didn't have what I ordered so I took buffet for the first time. My husband had a very large meal of his own, but when I offered him my barbequed ribs because I didn't like the taste, the waitress glared at me. Later, I gave him a bite of my pie, and she swooped in and said "There's really no sharing food!" Like we were some kind of lowlife street beggers coming in to scam the place! Puhleez! No matter what two people order in a restaurant, it's up to them if they offer bites, and this waitress was completely out of order and out of her role - not to mention blowing off her tip - by snapping at us like that. We were immediately deflated and left right away. But not before informing the hostess of our displeasure who did assure us that she, at least, was sorry and the waitress was definitely out of line. Big Disappointment at the Stone Crock, and we won't be taking our friends and family there anymore.
Stone Crock has recently done well to revamp, adding new items to the buffet occasionally, as well as old favourites. Options are impressive for a reasonable 12:99 buffet, quick, hot, lunch. Go and enjoy!
Brunch was awesome! Pasta was just a little dry, but the kitchen staff did an amazing job of keeping everything full and they seemed very professional
It was pricey for the variety of food in the buffet.
The Stone Crock is, in my mind, one of the best buffets in Ontario, hands down the best in the Region of Waterloo. It's hearty food for the hearty appetite. I’ve been going to the Stone Crock for most of my life (be it the one in St Jacobs or the old one in Elmira) and over the last 3 years average about a monthly visit. I’d say my coffee could be filled slightly more frequently but service is hardly my primary concern at a buffet and is still far from bad. I can appreciate that it may not be for everyone. If you eat like a bird for example, you may not be thrilled with the idea of a $16 buffet. Likewise, I could see the vegetarians not being overly impressed. If you like good, heartwarming food and, like me, could eat your weight in pork on a Sunday morning, I would strongly recommend this restaurant.
My husband and I love French Onion Soup and have to say this was the BEST we have ever had!! The rest of the food was Okay but the soup was out of this world! A must try!
We arrived at 10 for the breakfast buffet which is supposed to go to 11 per the posted notice, but the buffet looked tired. The cutlery seemed sticky and dirty but we chose better ones from the other place settings the waitress did not bother to remove. Scrambled eggs were dry and overcooked. The bacon was hard without being crispy. The sausages had a good flavour but were lukewarm and rubbery. French toast - or the Stone Crock variation of it - was dry and inedible. we got a couple of nice apple fritters but then they were the gone and no fresh ones were brought out. This is probably because several of the kitchen staff were out eating the remainder of the buffet - maybe they changed the buffet ending hours from 11 to 10, but people were still coming in. We were here a couple of years ago and had a nice experience. The price would be reasonable if this restaurant had its eye on the ball. There was a lot of staff around but the experience was disappointing and we will not some back.
