Oscar Valverde is most comfortable at work, and it’s no wonder. The owner of the upscale Il Mulino Restaurant has been in the dining industry since 1979. Tucked into the north side of the Eglinton West strip in Forest Hill, the classic Italian hot spot is his home away from home.
After emigrating from Peru to Montreal to Chicago, Oscar landed in Toronto at age 18 and found work as a busboy at Bangkok Garden. Oscar quickly rose through the restaurant ranks. “Three months after being hired, I became waiter, and six months later, I was supervisor. A year after that, I was manager,” he recalls of his start in the biz.
Next came a string of fine dining stints over Toronto — Centro’s, Splendido, Aqua, Mistura and Sotto Sotto — where he worked alongside top chefs and restaurateurs such as Massimo Capra and Franco Prevedello.
The lessons he learned through each experience were invaluable when he bought Il Mulino in 2008 after falling for the high arched ceilings, fantastic food and upscale vibe. “Working alongside restaurant icons taught me the golden rule of fine dining,” Oscar says. And what is that? “The customer is king. Always.”Read the story of Il Mulino Nuovo

This is absolutely the best restaurant in Toronto. It is not as expensive as many believe, and the view is great! Service - impeccable. Good food.
Mother's Day dinner. Food was spectacular, service fabulous. What a beautiful evening for a special occasion. Amazing wine list, delicious food & totally personalized service. Lovely!
Need to fix the type of cusine on here...its not japanese. Should be changed to Italian/Spanish/etc. Youll probably drive right by it if you dont know where to look for it, but well worth the stop. Its on the pricey side but if your ready to pay the money, its a great spot to drop the dough. The waiters were all very genuine and personable. Good grappa too!
It was a rare treat to get such good and attentive service here in toronto. The food was awsome, and we plan to return... Often!
Always good food and an enjoyable evening. Staff was very accommodating
The food is close to perfect, the service is wonderful, but the acoustics are terrible -- the walls and ceiling bounce the sounds around, rather than absorbing, so it gets noisy very quickly.
Amazing experience! Visited here with my boyfriend on Xmas Eve! We are from NY and staff was lovely and food was amazing... He is still mentioning Il Mulino today lol!
The service was excellent and most accommodating. The wine was also good. I enjoyed the fish. It was done just right- flaky and tasteful. There could have been a little less olive oil.
We really enjoyed the personalized service. The presentation of the meal matched our expectations. Definitely recommend going here and yes, we will come back soon.
Exellent service. Had a wonderful time and the meals were exellent.
Service was very slow. They claimed it was because of Tiff so they were short on waiters. Food was good just took a long time to come. They were apologetic and offered us gratis drinks after dinner. Will go back to try again as it is one of my favorite special occasion restaurants.
We had a lovely time celebrating my friend's birthday. Food was delicious, service was great!
One of the best meals I have had in a while. Service was phenomenal!
I had the feeling that the server was trying to turn the table in under one hour. The wine was poured very quickly. There were just four of us and one person had to wait a long time for his dinner. The restaurant wasn't all that busy so I don't understand this. The food, once all four of us had received it, was very good. I am not too enthusiastic about returning.
Sid was absolutely accommodating! We had an AMAZING experience and the food was fresh and delicious! All of the staff went above and beyond for us, as we were visiting from the US. Totally recommended and definitely our favorite experience at a restaurant in Toronto.
The waiter didn't give us a lot of attention and the sauce and presentation of my wife's main dish was not as good compared to 3 years ago.
Always great. Jay
The service was not impress at all. Food are So slow, the waiter is so rushy . Our glasses were empty more than 20 mins and we need to ask for water. Take them another 10 mins to get the water filled . We ordered the dessert when we order the food and at the end the waiter told us the cook miscalculated the number of the Creme brûlée. Very disappointed , not impress at all. Not recommended . No wonder they need to change ownership. Good luck to the new owner
Food is excellent. Service is second to none.
The restaurant was everything we thought from an ambiance POV. (Although the construction on Eg @ Allen was a little daunting) The service from Victor was outstanding!! The food though was a disappointment. I had Veal Parm, and although the portion size was great, the sauce was uninspired to say the least. My date had the Seafood Pasta and was equally disappointed. A positive dining experience overall, but food quality lower than we expected.
It is always a pleasure to dine at this restaurant. A true gem.
Our waiter Victor was amazing!!! He engaged us in conversation he made us laugh and we really enjoyed his company! I will return only if he is our waiter!! The food was ok a little overpriced but overall Victor made the evening probably one of the most enjoyable I have had in a long time!
We were looking for a new Italian restaurant to go to after our favourite one closed, and I feel we have found it! They were well organized, taking care of everyone attending for Valentine's Day. Everything was delicious and they made my Manhattan perfectly. The waiter bringing the bread did give us more bread while we were waiting for dessert, but given that it was busy, can't fault him for it. We will definitely be back.
Gnocchi was amazing! Extensive wine list. Lovely atmosphere and ambiance. Drake was right.
Loved the owner and the vibe! Honestly, I have become a loyal customer after my first visit. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our time.
I love this place. Been there a few times. Our waiter was great. Right out of a Sopranos episode. I highly recommend this place.
Appreciated the fact that the music was not too loud, and quite pleasant - many restaurants destroy the dining atmosphere with loud contemporary music that really belongs in a bar. Thanks for keeping it enjoyable!
Went for the winterlicious menu. Everything tasted amazing. The restaurant is small but it has a very nice, cozy atmosphere. First time here and won't be the last
Winterlicious Menu. My boyfriend and I have walked passed this restaurant many times, always saying we have to try someday. Winterlicious gave us the opportunity we've been putting off. Food was delicious, and we had a bottle of red from our favourite winery (not many places tend to carry, so what a treat). Was a bit loud, lots of people will do that. Service was exceptional, multiple servers stopping by to make sure our glasses were full and we were satisfied. Would definitely go back to try their normal menu on a normal night.
The service was excellent but unobtrusive. Both meals were very good. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner!
I liked the design, and the fact that place is spacious and not noisy. The service was good, but a few times they took my plates before I actually finished. The food was very average. It wasn't bad, but nothing extraordinary. The fish was soggy and the tiramisu was dry.
It was my first dining experience at Il Mulino and with Winterlicious I thought I would try it since I have only heard good things about this restaurant. I would like to start off by saying that the food was absolutely delicious! However, my experience as a whole was disappointing due to the service received. From the name on the receipt, Fernando, our server took our order shortly after we were seated and never returned to check up on us. Upon finishing our meal, he returned to stand right beside our table while processing the payment of another table's bill on the direct payment machine. He then followed to hand me the bill and had the audacity to say a gratuity of 20% was included. I thought it was extremely rude of him to stand by our table while he was completing a transaction and the fact that gratuity was included is UNHEARD of unless dining with the occasional large party of 6+. I understand that it must be a busy night due to Winterlicious , but I felt Fernando did not bother building rapport with our table since he knew he was going to make his 20% tip. I have been to countless restaurants in Toronto ranging from Jacobs to McDonald's for years, and I have never been so disappointed by the service especially from such a upscale restaurant such as Il Mulino.
I was rather disappointed in the service that was provided for my reservation of 11. From the way the owner treated us from the moment we walked in to the end of the night was despicable. Considering the fact that we spent over $600, this service was was disgusting. Our food took about a hour and a half to come and many of my guests were dissatisfied with their food however, many did not want to wait for another meal so they just ate what they were given. I have never gone to a restaurant for my birthday and felt as though we were not welcomed. Considering, I'm quite the foodie for fine dining, this was definitely a horrible experience and I will never eat at this establishment again.
