It's always a good meal at Kingyo! The regular menu has enough signature dishes to keep us coming back, but we always end up getting something from the special seasonal menu too. The atmosphere is casual and a little quirky, and the service is always great.

Nice Izakaya restaurant. Would have preferred a more spacious seating arrangement...tables were really close together for couples but still loved the great atmosphere and service,

Main dishes were nice, service was good and overall it was a nice dining experience. Dessert tasted nice but the portions were comically small and not worth ordering.

They ran out of beef tonge and raw octopus which is the only reason we went there. But other than this, everything else is fine. Hot stone beef was expensive though

There were people shouting back and forth (I think it was staff shouting to one another). The music was unnecessary in an already noisy room. The tv with Japanese cartoons & the neon signs on the north wall were great. Excellent food and an opportunity to try several new dishes.

Service was poor.. we sat for 25 mins before the server initially came to our table. Our drinks we ordered didn't come until the middle of our meal. One of the people delivering food dropped plate on table and food splashed all over us... we then wanted dessert, but we were waiting 30 mins after the meal ended for server to come... she didn't.. so we got the bill and left. The food was very good, and the restaurant has a great atmosphere.

Nice atmosphere, comfortable seating. Excellent service, perhaps a little too eager to clear dishes--we had to point out that we were not finished a couple of times but have to say that attentive is far better than being ignored. Food, especially the ebi mayo and stone bowl rice was excellent. The only disappointment was the matcha tiramisu--pretty tasteless compared to the matcha creme brulee which was delicious!

Came in for supper and was treated rudely by servers. Somebody was coming around regularly to fill up everybody's glass of water but it wasn't possible to order any alcoholic drinks after the initial order. After around an hour a server came over telling us that it was "last call" for deserts and that our reservation was almost up. Everybody rushed the remaining part of their meal because we thought that our dining experience was about to be cut off. After completing our food we ended up waiting around 20 minutes to obtain a bill. All that being said, food was good and the atmosphere was interesting but the overall experience was weird.

Hated the food. Cheap quality carby food with little substance. The fish in the rolls are the smallest ever experienced mainly just a chunk of rice with "fish jam" on top. By this I mean they chopped the fish so fine that it's mush and then spread it so thin like jam. The seafood in the seafood rice is mainly rice. Fried shrimp with mayo was meh (greasy not special). Steak tough and of cheap quality. Chicken chunks with Magic Powder (?!) was o.k., best of evening but not worth going back for. When you look at the menu you think wow these are great prices until you have the food and realize everything is so overpriced because it is of such poor quality. Best thing was strong pot of green tea.

Toronto’s most authentic izakaya experiences

This Cabbagetown spot reflects a traditionally minded izakaya inspired by classic Japanese cuisine. Featuring a variety of fresh fish, meat, and vegetables, each dish is built of a few simple items that accumulate into exquisite flavours. Diced beef tenderloin served with grated daikon, shisho leaf, and Japanese steak sauce is a superb dish that balances light and heavy on the palette. With its dark wood and bamboo, Kingyo replicates the comfort and luxury of eating in Japan’s urban centres.
