Good Sushi

Just a quarter block off Elgin Street, this place was doing pretty good business for a Tuesday evening. The service was good and the sushi was nice and fresh. The soft-shell crab was not large but it was really very delicious and nice and crisp.

After having read many reviews of the Japanese restaurants in Ottawa we went to Genji Japanese Restaurant to celebrate our 35th. wedding anniversary and we are very glad we did. We told our waitress, Serena, that we did not know much about Japanese food and asked for her recommendation. She recommended the dinner for two which gave us a taste of several different dishes. The food was delicious, excellently prepared and presented beautifully. They even gave us a free dessert to help us celebrate. Serena was a joy to have serving us. She was very attentive to our needs and kept coming back to make sure that everything was OK and that we were happy. Our teapot never grew cold or empty! All in all it was a meal and an evening that we will not forget in a hurry.

Best Japanese food ever. So good we had dinner on two consecutive nights. Saying something coming from a person who has eaten at a lot of well regarded Japanese restaurants across our country.

DELICIOUS

THE BEST!!! place to get sushi. slightly more expensive than your average sushi restaurant but the selection of other japanese cuisine and the fish served there is absolutely delicious. it is a nice quiet calm atmosphere with the choice of either sushi bar or a booth, food was always excellent and the staff is very polite. THE BEST HANDROLL I HAVE EVER EATEN. this place is not formal, but a nice relaxed well-dressed casual. such a great place for japanese cuisine and for any sushi lover like myself.

Delicious food, great service!!

This was my first time at Genji, first time at a Japanese restaurant. The service was prompt and polite. We ordered drinks first and then our meal. Most meals came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. The teriyaki (both of them) looked exactly like the pictures on the menu! The meat was tender, the vegetable properly cooked (not too hard, not too soft) and the rice was sticky, perfect for eating with chopsticks. All in all, a wonderful dining experience!

The best Bento box we ever tried

We went to Genji for lunch all the times and our experience was completely different than the one below. We have tried their Bento Box, which includes choice of teriyaki (I ordered beef teriyaki and my colleage ordered chicken teriyaki) with stir fried vegetables, Kani Cream Croquette breaded mash potatoes with crab, 2 pan-fried beef Gyoza. Both of us think that it was a good deal for $16. The Gyoza that we tried were pan-fried. I don't think they were deep-fried. We also tried their dinner menu. They have the best sushi and sashimi in Ottawa. Go try it and you will thank me for my recommendation.

Tried out this restaurant, only to be disappointed.

I went for a late lunch around 2PM for lunch. There was no one in the restaurant upon entry, and I waited for 5 minutes till a server came to seat me. Greeted with no smile or a simple "Hi". The interior was well done, and I was fascinated by the touch of high tech ordering machines they had at the entrance and at the cash register. I ordered the bento box with a glass of water. The lunch came with a soup and salad, which both tasted mediocre. The salad also had wilted and blackened pieces of lettuce, the soup tasted watery and sandy at the bottom of the bowl. When the bento came out, it was placed in front of me as if they did something wrong to them. The meal had teriyaki chicken with two deep fried gyoza, two pieces of crab korokke and rice. The rice was on the dried-out side, as if it was reheated in the microwave. When I tried out the chicken, it did not taste like teriyaki sauce. It took me a few extra bites to figure out that the sauce it was Peking duck sauce. :P The gyoza was another downer, since both pieces were deep-fried, not pan-fried, and drowned in some kind of ponzu sauce. The only thing that tasted good was the korokke that looked as if it was frozen food from the local supermarket. The sauce for the korokke did not match the flavor for the meal. At the end of all things, I found this to be another disappointing Japanese restaurant that I wasted $20 on. I don't think I would even bother going back to try the sushi or sashimi. If cooks or owners want to hold a successful Japanese restaurant, then learn from the masters in Japan or at least get some proper tips from those who know what it is suppose to be/taste like.

Had a group of 10, 2 were 2 yr old children. The food was good, the flow of food coming was good for appetizers. The price was kinda higher then previous reviews stated, like sushi for two pieces is $6-$10 which to me is pricey. Nobody complained about the quality or taste as it was all delicious. Two people bought a set meal with many appetizers but the problem was the main course, everyone was done and they still didn't have their food. When we asked they looked into it but nobody came back to tell us the answer, but the manager knew the answer. We never got the answer till we paid the bill which was they forgot to make it or the chef was trying to pump out other tables main courses but really if 6 have finished their main course, do two people really need to wait. Those two got 10% off as a result. My meal came to 80 but included for two appetizers, wine, soup (which was yummy) main meal and desert. Service was horrible, our server was ok but the guy working and manager didn't communicate well not due to language but updates on our meals. You would ask for water and they would forget, we ordered tea at the end and it never came so we paid our bill and didnt get billed for it. You would wave down a waiter at the bar he would finish his little clean up then come see us, forget what we want and would have to remind him. Of course orders can be forgotten but I am not sure I would go again. The waiters and waitress need to learn how to do their job such as make sure you dont forget request, make sure you have enough water, ask how things are and check up a couple times and just common things you would expect when you drop 40$ for a complete meal.

We finally tried out this restaurant for lunch. If it is not our friend's recommendation, I don't think I will be able to find this hidden gem in Ottawa. The food was great and can't believe the low price. For less than $15 (before tax), I filled my stomach with healthy and delicious food. I will bring my family here for dinner.

I've eaten sushi all over the world, and Genji is far and away the best in Ottawa. Which isn't necessarily saying much given the sorry state of the sushi grade fish this city often tries to pass off on the unsuspecting consumer. Here the quality is excellent, the staples are great, and the creative rolls and appetizers are at worse ambitious, and at best addictive. Great ambience, best bang for your sushi buck in terms of quality in Ottawa. Would be great to have free edamame with your meals; you'd get a lot of other people hooked on it and coming back.

We went to Genji for dinner because most of the restaurants were closed today for the Victoria long weekend. To our surprise, the food was outstanding. We were so pleased with our meal and we gave $20 tips to the server.

I heard that this is one of the restaurants recommended by Chef Stephen Vardy on CBC many months ago. But I just didn't get a chance to go. We finally went and were so pleased with the food qualiy. My sushi-loving husband agreed with Chef Vardy as soon as we had tasted our shrimp won-ton appetizer. Genji does well with their appetizer, sweet potato sushi and salmon skin sushi. The prices are reasonable. We even bought take-out for our university son who didn't go with us.

A bento box of satisfying sushi restaurants in Ottawa

A bento box of satisfying sushi restaurants in Ottawa

A downtown destination for Japanese fusion cuisine, with bright blonde décor and a modern take on traditional shoji screens, Genji offers both teriyaki and tempura dishes, along with sushi. The seaweed salad, dressed with sesame dressing, makes a nice starter. Nigiri options include flying fish roe and cuttlefish. Various unusual fruit maki are available at dinner.
