Decided to do tak...

Decided to do take out and was very disappointed. Chewy fish&chips, thin patty on the bacon cheese burger, chewy chicken wings- though the honey garlic sauce was delicious. Chips on the fish and burger was very meager-- would not recommend this place to anyone. Maybe dine-in is better. For the price of $45 we were very unhappy. The fish and wings tasted either freezer burnt or overly fried.

Scotch at The Highlander

After walking past this place once on a summer Friday night I knew I had to try it out and I am glad I did. If you love scotch and Scottish themed cuisine this is the place in Ottawa to get it. The service was good for a weekend night; our table pretty much got drinks within 5 to 10 minutes of ordering and got food 10 to 15 minutes after ordering. The atmosphere is very nice, it kind of feels like you are sitting in your grandfathers basement, very cosy. There is an extensive scotch list offering sipping and tasting portions and the menu offers dishes that can be difficult to find at a more conventional restaurant. However, it can be an expensive place to visit. It would be hard to spend less than $60 here on an appetizer, a meal, and drinks. Regardless, if I find myself in Ottawa again I will defiantly visit The Highlander again.

Rude Waitress

First time visitor.. The waitress Lori (blond hair) puts her tattooed right arm on the table and asks what we drink. She places two coasters on the table but throws the other two. We ordered the drinks and one of my friends asks for a coke with no ice. Lori comes back with the drinks and mentions them by brand. She said "coke no ice" but when my friend asks if the coke is diet Lori says it is Pepsi. When my friend told her that she asked for coke she tells her that she only brings the drinks she does not pour them and literally grabs the glass aggressively while mentioning that nobody returned a Pepsi before because it was not coke. Lori was the rudest waitress I ever met in the By Ward Market but, to be honest, the rudest I ever met waited for us in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Lori was close but did not quite make it as the rudest. The patio was nice but people were allowed to smoke, which was kind of annoying for non-smokers. The food was OK but the salad was pretty sad looking. This was my first and probably the last visit at The Highlander. Federico

Good hangout

Great place, great drinks, great food. Only a few items on the menu are mediocre. Most of it is delicious. Portions are generous. Some of the bartenders can fix a superb drink, others less so.

The food I tried at Highlander were very good, better than most of the pubs in Byward market area but the quality did falter on certain days. The reason why I won't be returning to Highlander anymore is because of the service you get. I went to Highlander about 3-4 times and every time I went, the servers never once smiled or reply me when I said "thank you". Although I never expect high/friendly service from a pub I never want a static and emotionless service. It's too bad really, I thought I found a really good pub to go to every weekend.

nice atmosphere, decent food.

nice little place with like 200 different types of scotch. drank beer instead, it was pretty good but not really my style. the waitress was very nice (kristina), polite, and prompt. mashed potatoes were lumpy, but in a good way, if that makes sense. french fries were overdone though, and chicken was a little on the dry side. but the dish was very well constructed and displayed. veggie wrap was "very good." most of the people there were middle aged men in sweaters, and for some reason they had NFL on tv rather than soccer, which is kind of odd for a place that puts so much effort into marketing itself as scottish.
