Awful customer service, I don't recommend this place to anyone, if you're having a good night an experience at the only will sure screw that up.
I've reviewed "The Only" here before and mentioned how horrible the staff is. This has changed, I mean the staff had been replaced some months ago. I'm happy to say the new staff is much much better. Friendly and respectful for the most part.
WOW! I wish that I'd discovered this place sooner. I was thoroughly impressed with the food and portion sizes. The service was ok. I paid at the bar right away, so I didn't really have any issues. I also didn't mind the wait, once I saw my plate! Never in my life have I not been able to eat my brie because there was too much. How great is that?! It was delicious, and very filling! They also had no issue swapping out an item... no fuss, no extra charge for it, nothing... I AM VERY HAPPY and this good, cuz I AM VERY PICKY when it comes to food. I did not enjoy the loud music so much, it was hard to have a conversation... Being a "foodie"- music affects digestion and the music needed to be a little less "intense". Otherwise- BRAVO!
Like the other reviews-The staff are horrible, and are appalled when you order a breakfast at 10am ...Food is always wonderful though, and the patio is just gorgeous. I love coming here in the spring/summer/fall. ,
I've been to the Only a few times, usually for drinks in the evening, but I have also been there for breakfast a couple times. Maybe I am always too immersed with the atmosphere and the people I go with to notice any dirty looks from the staff or rude behavior. I often go there with my bf and he is a very friendly and easygoing person. The interaction between us and the staff never seemed like there was disdain or anything like that. But it is very different from some restaurants where they are all about pleasing the customer, smiling, chatting with them and going out of their way for them. After all, at The Only, they don't ask you what you would like, you just have to go up and tell them, then wait a while for your food to arrive, but at least the food is good and the portion sizes are satisfying. Yes, they would get more business if they were sweet and cheery and went out of their way to serve the customer, but they still get a good amount of business as is. It's a good place to go if you just want to do your own thing with friends or family and you don't care about having staff/customer interaction. If I want to go somewhere that has that then I will, but The Only is nice for other reasons. Patio, atmosphere, food, drink, and beer selection. Sometimes that's all ya need.
Terrible place and the service, what there was of it, was presented by the most surliest unpleasant person. Unbelievabley rude. If it wasn't for the opportunity to see my son who we don't see very often we would have left immediately. However, the food was not that bad but not good enough to ever go back there. I was appalled.
Terry R Went for Breakfast on Mon.Dec.15 with my son and his girlfriend. We put are orders in, 3 bacon and eggs. Twice we asked were the food was and told 15 minutes. One hour and 45 minutes ,and still no food. As we left we told the waitress the situation and still no apology.and there was no food on the grill.
One thing I love about this place is the patio. It is gorgeous and right next to creek! I love the look of the place. I haven't had a bad experience like most people here have posted, and I'm thankful for that. I can see where it would come from though. The blonde lady was nice even when I didn't have cash (I didn't realize that they take cash only). I went to the CIBC and took care of that. When I came back, I paid a very grouchy looking middle-aged man. He didn't say a word to us, but took the money and returned the change. I almost feel like I shouldn't have tipped based on his behaviour. Besides that, the place is clean, and the beer selection is great! Suggested improvements is to get a machine for credit/debit payments and for that guy to be nicer to customers. I recall seeing him once before and he was equally dissatisfied. I can't rate the food as I never ate there, so my food rating is based on the beer selection.
I'm responding to Shalaine W's review (in quotations below) "Review: I love The Only Cafe. The food is excellent, the patio is beautiful, and although it may take some time for your meal, it's definitely worth the wait. You may think the staff is rude, and unwelcoming, but they are a very nice bunch of people. Be nice to them, respect them and be respected." I agree, the food is good and the patio is fantastic. I think Shalaine W may have the respect thing backwards. I've been a regular at The Only for a couple of years, to this day I am still not greeted when I enter and am often met with a dirty look. I have never been drunk, rude or abusive in any way to the staff or other customers. I'm never anything but pleasant and I always tip well. Some of the treatment I've received at The Only borders on abuse. I've been spoken to, by members of the staff with extreme sarcasm and even had one of the staff literally throw my change at me(hitting me in the chest) - to the shock of myself, my friend that was with me that evening and other nearby customers. You may think I enjoy the abuse, believe me I do not! I continue to go to The Only because I love the patio, the World's Best sandwich is very good, some of the clientele are enjoyable, the bohemian atmosphere of the café itself and other than the way I'm treated by the staff, I feel comfortable there. Shalaine W, as I stated above, I'm nothing but pleasant to the staff and treat them in a respectful manner. The respect has almost never been returned. Really, shouldn't the customer be treated with respect simply because he or she is a customer? To the staff: If you think you're cool, you're probably not.
It's all been said in the other reviews here. Hint to staff; Bohemian doesn't mean rude and unfriendly. The 'World's Best' is a great sandwich!

I love The Only. I love the bohemian atmosphere. I love the mix of customers. I really love the patio, at least in the summer. The staff, for the most part, are horrible! The woman that works there gives me a dirty look everytime I enter the restaurant and for no reason that I'm aware of, I don't behave badly and I always leave a generous tip(maybe I should rethink that). The gent behind the bar is a complete *******. The owner, on the other hand is quite a nice and personable gentleman. I go to the Only because of the bohemian atmosphere, the patio and the clientele. I just wish the staff would treat me with a little more kindness, but I'll continue to put up with it.
My teenage son and I go here almost every Saturday for lunch. We both love the food, and my boy said his was the best breakfast he's had. The food is made fresh, the music is a great education. Sure, the food takes time to prepare, but we buy a paper (or read the ones left on the bar) and make an afternoon of it.
The Only is a strange place, but we visited for the breakfasts, which really aren't too bad. However it always takes FOREVER to get the food. Regardless, on this occasion we decided the wait was worth it and went to the Only. The visit turned sour when our waiter, a sour old man, began getting very abrupt with us. As usual the food took forever to arrive, and any requests we made were met with a disgusted look. We remained pleasant with him and tried to enjoy ourselves just the same. When we were leaving, we are all over-charged, and this on top of the poor service led us all to leave no tip whatsoever. After exiting, the man came out after us, loudly proclaiming we'd better not bother visiting again if we weren't planning to tip. Fair enough, there's lots of other great breakfast places in town.
Love this place! Surrounded by art and pop culture photos, enjoy a unique, fresh menu filled with unpretentiously healthy choices. Lots of beer variety, juices, beer snacks, sharing platters (hummous and pita served with red onion circles, olives, lemon, mmmm) The service is, let's say, part of the charm. Play nice and nobody gets hurt.
The Only is a cool place to relax and hang out, good choice of beer and a great brunch - we come here all the time and always have a good time. In the summer, the patio is great. It's mostly a university crowd but its the kind of place where any age seems to fit in, so long as you don't mind all those kids and their rock and roll. The service... well, I actually had great service the last time I was in, and it was kind of disappointing in a way! Bring back the surly!
world best sandwich is the "worlds best " sandwich and the ginbger mick salad is awesome as well.
the food as always was amazing, the service as always was terrible. If the food wasn`t so good I would never set foot in the place again
Food is always delicious. However, I generally dislike going there, any time, unless I'm with a good group of friends. It's often too crowded, the staff are all jerks (with a rare exception) and they have a terrible choice of whiskey (well, they might have a decent choice but don't bother asking the bartender. You'll just get dirty looks). I agree with a previous post -- if the food wasn't so tasty, I would never set foot in the place.
The service was awful. The place was busy and the waitress didn't have the time to answer any of our questions. Definately will not be going back.
