Christopher Caterer is fearless when it comes to design. The owner of Artifacts admits to trying every sort of design in his home, laughingly describing the style as “crazy.” The former fashion designer doesn’t shy away from mixing fabrics and patterns, saying, “I like home goods like I like fashion, so I embrace some trends; I’m not afraid to do a pattern. There’s nothing that represents masculine or feminine to me, so flowers are definitely not out, animal skin is über sexy and I love velvet.”
However, when it comes to his clients’ homes, Christopher is careful not to impose his tastes on their abodes. He understands that everyone has to feel comfortable in their own home no matter how it’s styled, and really takes the time to listen to what they want. “I actually don’t guide a client,” he says. “I let a client design their own environment. I don’t like to get hired to create a look; I get hired to create an environment for the client that represents their taste… The final decision is always the clients’ because that is their environment. What you may like and what I may like are very different and when you get home, I feel that you should be happy with your choices.”
