Pros: The toffee pudding was to die for and the oysters were great. Very friendly staff. Cons: -Wish the $5/glass Beast120 menu wines were a better (red & white specially). You can get great bottles of wine at the LCBO fro $10-$15 so I don't see why this would be a problem. -Atmosphere leaves lots to be desired. Overall: Will return for oysters and pudding.

Great little spot off the hustle and bustle of King Street West. Came here for my fiances birthday. The menu was varied in the flavour profile of each dish which was really refreshing. Sharing plates but with many different flavours like Japanese, Mediterranean, French, and Canadian. We had the pickled veggies, warn olives, and bread which were all delicious. We also enjoyed the rapinni which was one of our favourites and the brussle sprouts which were cooked perfectly. We had the prawn as well and the cake it was on was delicious. For our final two dishes (yes, we ate a lot!) we had the ham hocks which were fabulously rich and tasty as well as the poutine. Although the poutine has been on the menu for six years (we were told), we weren't thrilled. Although not bad, it just wasn't has flavourful as all the other dishes and just fell short. One of my favourite parts of the meal is when our special made chocolate birthday cake came out. Rachelle, the pastry chef agreed to make a cake especially for my fiance since he really loves chocolate and there weren't any chocolate desserts on the menu. It was fabulously rich and moist and we enjoyed it for 2 days. We really enjoyed our meal, and the half priced bottles of wine (on Wednesday)!

The Beast was a fine dining choice for our family before a show at Second City. For dinner, expect tapas-style small plates to share. Portions were a bit small for four to share (2 older sons) but we made it work. While waitstaff recommended 3-4 dishes per guest, we did just fine with 9 for family of 4. Surprisingly, the boys enjoyed the smoked trout salad and pickled veggies the best.

Overall, dinner was just 'OK' which was a little disappointing considering that the brunch menu is so good. 3 of us ordered the following: 1) Grilled Squid Okonomiyaki - not bad, but "over-sauced" and $14 for such a small dish is overpriced. 2) Smoked Trout, spicy greens, apples, candied pecans - not bad, but again, $13 for the serving size is overpriced. 3) "Poutine", fried gnocchi, country gravy, cheese curds, creme fraiche - not very good. Overall dish lacked basic seasoning. The fried gnocchi was tasteless and the country gravy which would have helped the bland gnocchi was very disappointing. It tasted like a standard white flower rue with almost no seasoning. Surprising, considering all of the other dishes were borderline over seasoned or sauced. 4) Pork Hocks, kecap, kimchi, roasted peanuts - fairly tasty, but $13 for 4 little morsels is overpriced. Borderline overuse of the kecap here, especially with the kimchi. We ordered only 4 dishes to start and chose not to order anything else primarily because the overall taste and portion sizes did not justify the prices. Left relatively unsatisfied. Service was friendly though.

Best farm-to-table restaurants in Toronto

Best farm-to-table restaurants in Toronto

All of the ingredients at Beast Restaurant are sourced from Ontario producers and farmers. Open in 2011, it’s known for its use of rare cuts and parts of meat, like beef heart and liver. The restaurant has a 120 menu, which means the menu is only available for 120 minutes, more specifically between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. nightly. There is also a dinner menu and weekend brunch.

Half-priced wine nights in Toronto's west end

Half-priced wine nights in Toronto's west end

Wednesdays at this spot draw Toronto wine lovers with half-priced bottles on offer from 5 pm to close. As its name would suggest, Beast is a destination for carnivores and those particularly partial to Canadian-style cooking. Finding home in the yuppie-in-the-best-way Trinity Niagara neighbourhood, it’s become a King Wester’s spot for happy hour cocktails with a side of house tartare or duck pastrami, or a selection of heartier dinner items like pork hocks, flat iron steak, or grilled lamb belly (but don’t miss out on the menu’s stellar selection of fish dishes on offer as well).

Finisher’s feast: Eats for after the Goodlife Marathon

Finisher’s feast: Eats for after the Goodlife Marathon

There’s no surprise that the menu at this acclaimed King West restaurant is designed for carnivorous appetites. Chef Scott Vivian’s creative meat-forward plates are packed with protein and prepared with local ingredients sourced from Ontario farmers. We suggest the signature Beastwich, a gourmet breakfast sandwich that sees fried chicken thigh, pimento cheese and egg served atop a buttermilk biscuit and drowned in pork sausage gravy. Even the sweet eats get an animalistic upgrade — cranberry French toast comes topped with duck confit and the maple-bacon doughnuts (baked fresh by Scott’s wife Rachelle) are a local favourite.
