Meet the owner

One sign of a good restaurant is the quality of its staff. If they’ve been there a while, you know you’re entering an establishment that’s trusted and focused on delivering a great experience. And if you find a spot where a staff member thought so highly of it he wanted to buy it, like Nathan Arulappu did at Café la Gaffe, then even better.

Nathan started working at the restaurant and immediately fell in love with its ambiance, food selection, location and team atmosphere. So when the opportunity came up in 2004 to take a more active role in the business, he leapt at it.

“When I went to university, I worked here,” says Nathan. While most of us leave our university jobs behind when we graduate, Nathan was drawn so strongly to Café la Gaffe, it felt like home. His connection to his team is strengthened by the fact that he has maintained his original position in the kitchen, remaining hands-on preparing the food, instead of hiding away in the back.

His employees appreciate seeing him working alongside them, and they can see how invested he is in the restaurant. “We work together as a team,” says Nathan of the staff and owners at Café la Gaffe.

Everytime I think of this place I salivate

Great food! The Lamb Shank, the Chicken and pasta, the Risotto..ALL AMAZING! A must visit. I work close to this restaurant and my co-workers grab lunch from here once in awhile and each time I have been impressed. The fact that we go for lunch..indicates the fast service. The extension of the restaurant is..well imaginative.

Best of Baldwin

I've been to Cafe la Gaffe several times, for both lunch and dinner, and I've never been disappointed. The food is delicious. I'm a vegetarian and have tried a few of their pizzas as well as their mushroom risotto, and all have been great. I've never had problems with the service (except for one silly incident where the waitress kept forgetting to bring me a tea bag for my tea). Overall, I find the place cozy and pleasant. The only issue is that their portions are huge and I always end up so full!

If I'm on Baldwin, I'm probably at Cafe le Gaffe. End of story. It is a cozy little French restaurant that I fell in love with many years ago. Although I find the accompanying salad over-dressed, they're pizzas are great. Well layered with toppings, I've never had a bad experience.

Based on the lack of reviews you would think this...

Based on the lack of reviews you would think this place is a hidden gem. Fresh ingredients, interesting combinations, and an affordable wine list - what more could you ask for? The goat cheese pizza with madras curry spices sounds odd, but it's a wonderful combination.

Very overcooked food and refused to divide our bills up due to 'busy' environment (despite a very empty restaurant), causing us to have to spend. Lot of time and energy dividing it ourselves. Very frustrating.

Cafe la gaffe has been my little hidden gem for the past 20 years.I went for valentine's and it was perfect. The service is that perfect balance of friendly, great yet unobtrusive service. The food is a dependable high quality always a few surprises, the Digby scallops were on a lovelyrics broth closer to a soup. The simple things like filet mignon and carrots were spot on which is always a surprise when you dine out. The creme Brulee was an old recipe they resurrected. Highly recommend this place.

We had to wait over 20 minutes even though we had reservations and were early. The food was pretty good but my meat was tough (pork chop) so I couldn't eat it.

The food was delicious and decor was warm and inviting. They even had a space heater near the front where we were sitting, nice addition. But the standout star was the only waiter in the restaurant waiting on 8+ tables at the same time, and being incredibly attentive and considerate. Great dining experience all around! I'll be back for Summerlicious.

The place had a cool vibe with eccentric paintings - only saving grace of the experience. Was quite busy for winterlicious, so service wasn't great (not bad either), but our group of three was seated in a small corner usually meant for two, right in front of the door. In addition the cold drafts every time someone walked in, we also had other customers stumble on to us as they walked in. We had made reservations, so you'd think they would plan the seating better. The food was mediocre at best. For the appetizer, we had a coconut lentil soup - neither of the main ingredients shone through in this watered down rendition. I chose the risotto as my main which on the website had stated was accompanied with scallops and shrimp. I was obviously disappointed to see the in-person menu had chicken instead. Apparently, they do it every winterlicious/summerlicious which is ABSOLUTELY misleading and sneaky to do so intentionally. With that being said, the risotto had a nice homey feel to it. On the other hand, the dessert was chocolate gunk with this extremely watery sugar milk all over the plate - so unappetizing. Not worth it to only enjoy 1/3 courses.

We had the booking but they put down in their book on the wrong date! Luckily there were a big group leaving but we still waited at the entrance for 20 min! The menu was extensive for winterlicious dinner priced at $28 was reasonable. It is very busy and the waiter tried his best to do the service. Though a few times we have to wait for our companion`s course before we can all enjoy the food

nice atmosphere and decor. the service was slow with poor beer knowledge. the escargot was great, and steak was done as expected. Unfortunately, the desserts were both big disappointments, the lamb shank was bland, and the combination of pate and salad was strange and unexpected. would not go back.

This was our last minute Winterlicious random pick, the menu has a lot of variety, so we decided to try it out. Since it's last minute, the only time slot available was 9:30pm, quite a bit later than our usual meal time. Got a call from the restaurant at around 8:30pm, said that they can seat us at 8:45pm if we want to eat earlier, so I called up everyone and get there as fast as we can and got seated right away. What a nice surprise! All of us inhaled our food! Will for sure be back other times!

One of the smallest restaurants in the city also happens to be one of the most romantic. Squeezed together in this tiny space, sparks are gonna fly. And while Le Gaffe is open for breakfast, lunch and brunch, cozying up during dinner is best. The menu offers everything from pizzas, pastas, risotto and wonderful mains like Butterflied filet of Atlantic Salmon (that’s a first), New York Striploin, Lamb Sirloin and Osso Bucco. Date night just got exciting again.

Café La Gaffe is a great place to enjoy a French and Mediterranean meal in a casual and relaxing atmosphere. On their Winterlicious menu you’ll find escargots with garlic and Pernod butter sauce, roasted Muscovy duck confit with an orange and anise glaze, and gateau creole, a bittersweet Belgian chocolate cake baked with dark rum.
