Meet the owner

Fat Pasha sits adjacent to the railroad tracks on the northern edge of the Annex, in the former home of long-time neighbourhood staple, Indian Rice Factory. Sometimes people will wander in unaware of the business change—certain elements of the old restaurant, like its iconic back patio koi pond, have remained—but it doesn't take long to figure out that there's a new kid on the block.

“The Grateful Dead is always on,” says the restaurant's front-of-house manager Kathleen Shattock as she gestures to the mural behind her, which features a fez-clad figure with a more-than-passing resemblance to Jerry Garcia against a background of iconic Middle Eastern vignettes rendered in a puff of hookah smoke. Another mural on the building's exterior wall shows the same husky fellow parting the red sea.

The mural sums up Fat Pasha's concept: Old-school Middle Eastern cuisine with a rock-and-roll twist.

This particular fusion is personal for owner Anthony Rose, who is both Jewish and a total Deadhead. As Kathleen puts it, his vision for Fat Pasha was to blend creative Middle Eastern culinary stylings reminiscent of Israeli-born chef Yotam Ottolenghi with “Jewish grandmother food” such as latkes, lox and brisket.

As for the rock-and-roll? Well, that part just comes naturally. “We like having loud and ruckus atmospheres and having a lot of fun doing what we do,” says Kathleen.

Out of this world delicious - we ordered the 5 sample salatim with hot fresh pita, latkas and the lamb kofta - incredible food experience and can't wait to go back! Our waiter was fantastic and the wine was perfect. We found the wine very very very expensive compared to similar restaurants. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Honestly, used to be my absolute go to every chance I had now I am just not loving it. Menu keeps changing too often, but honestly one of my biggest pet peeves is having to pay $10 for a pot of coffee. Just get a drip coffee machine so I can have 2 or 3 basic cups of coffee for $3 like everywhere else. Yesterday cost me $25 for coffee, eggs and toast...

Absolutely wonderful meal. Loved all the dishes. You need to book reservation well in advance which is a little difficult as we travel from out of town. We have enjoyed both dinners and weekend brunches. We are looking forward to the patio season.

Dinner was delicious. The atmosphere was okay, but we were sandwiched between two other couples and close to the front door which kept opening ( super cold). Would go back though. Food is always great and very reasonably priced.

Had dinner with a couple of girlfriends. Terrific food and nice casual atmosphere. The best thing was the brussel sprouts, wonderfully roasted in a sweet by spicy marinade. I enjoyed the cauliflower very much, but felt that it could have used roasting for a longer time to caramelize a bit more. We had a salatim platter with eggplant, tabbouleh and red pepper. Eggplant was the best. The only dish a little disappointing was the perch - breaded coating was a bit heavy and this dish not a bursting with flavour as the others. Overall, we still had a wonderful meal and will be back.

International brunches of Toronto

Falafel, shakshuka, a whole head of cauliflower and a mint tea. Is there anything that sounds more tantalizing than brunch at Fat Pasha? This Dupont Street establishment has a developed a great rep for serving up one of the city’s best Mediterranean dinners, and the brunch is on point too. The back patio is great for groups, and don’t forget to order a round of labneh for the table to start.

The top patios in Toronto: West end edition

Located on the Northeast corner of Dupont and Howland, Fat Pasha is a funky, family-friendly restaurant that serves what they refer to as “good Jew food.” Popular menu items include the Montreal steak-spiced flat iron (served with barbarian butter), the latke platter and the Babka bread pudding for dessert – although Instagrammers tend to swoon for the colourful and now-infamous cauliflower dish. Their back patio has the feel of a warm, secluded courtyard, and is stocked with gorgeous wooden benches and tables, making it the ideal place for an outdoor summer gathering.
