Meet the owner

In 1986, when Irene Morales left her homeland to work for the Chilean consulate here in Canada, she missed eating her native food. “I lived across from U of T where there were lots of immigrants from Chile,” Irene recalls, referring to the house she still lives in today. “Back then, you couldn’t find a great Chilean empanada, so I started making them and sharing them and before I knew it, I had made a name for myself.”

What is special about empanadas? They're a delicious, affordable dish, and one is enough for one person, Irene explains. She makes the dough from scratch, then uses it to wrap different homemade fillings including everything from chicken to beef to veggies to cheese. She insists, “People love them.”

Kensington market treasure!

I love this place. It takes me away to another place in the middle of winter as the latin music plays and the food is served. The empanadas are beautiful and they make a very special and simple salad with avocado and broccoli that you must try. The food is simple and beautiful and are a reflection of the wonderful people who work very hard to make the food happen.

My cousin and I were in Kensinton Market shopping for vintage duds for a photo shoot when we started to get hunger pangs. Not knowing the food establishments too well in the area, we found this place purely by chance. None of us have had much prior experience with South American cuisine before our visit to Irene's Jumbo Empanadas. We were greeted warmly and cheerfully by who I would assume was Irene. She answered our questions about the ingredients used in the food, and we happily ordered our meal (2 chicken empanadas and 2 humitas). After a brief wait for our food (approx. 10 minutes if not less), we received our meals. We greedily tucked into our empanadas and were delighted at the taste. Delicious! The humitas (while confusing at first, being wrapped in corn husks) were FANTASTIC! My cousin and I were completely satisfied after our meals, and couldn't stop raving about the place afterwards. Our bill came to less than $20, including a tip and two cans of iced tea. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone jonesing for South American cuisine!

I have been eating from here for over a decade i am guessing. So much amazing good food in walking distance from JE, but JE is tops for TO empanadas Gorgeous empanadas, especisally the beef. Desert cookies are so good with Louis americanos (cofee). Better than the empanadas across the street, for sure, but they are nice folks too, and Segovia sAUSAGES are sooooooooooooo goood.

Where to grab lunch in Toronto's Kensington Market

Just like the name implies, one jumbo empanada is the cheap, filling, on-the-go meal (although those seeking a sit-down snack should note: this Chilean joint has indoor and patio seating as well). Five dollars will get you your choice of a beef, chicken or cheese empanada. Or switch things up and sample the oh-so-delicious humitas – tamales stuffed with sweet creamed corn and spices.
