From the quaint menu to quirky marketing, everything at Le Papillon on Front is done in house, and all staff lend a hand.

General manager Sean Gowland says the homemade rule goes a long way to not only keeping costs down, but also towards creating a positive, welcoming and inclusive environment for every walk of life. “We like to be able to cater to a lot of vibes,” says Sean. “We like to tip on the edge of trendy but there’s no 'I’m not hip enough to go there' or 'I’m too hip to go there.'”

Dishes like hearty French onion soup and tourtière – a traditional Québecois meat pie of seasoned veal, beef and pork with house chutney, potatoes and market vegetables – are comparable to what you’d be served at Grandma’s. The restaurant is stylishly impressive, yet stills feels homey, comfortable and relaxed.

Le Papillon on Front's eclectic team includes a few Francophone servers who help to give the restaurant its French-Canadian authenticity and also come in handy when Toronto classrooms come to learn the language and experience the cuisine. “It’s different being an independent restaurant,” says Sean. “We really do our best to make sure our customers leave happy.”

I can not beleive that no one else has written a review for the Le Papillion. It is my top choice for a restaurant if you want a romantic date atmosphere or a nice place to take your parents when the come to town. The serive is always great, the food is consistently great. The prices are quite reasonable. The crepes are always fresh and delicious, the salmon good, great French Onion soup. I also love the tarte au sucre (maple suger pie) for dessert- its the only place in Toronto that I know of that serves tarte au sucre. Great quebecois fare!

The server wasn't the friendliest guy, just seemed like he wasn't having the best day and didn't care to do anything but the basics for us. Food was great! My father was very disappointed that nobody could French to him while at a French restaurant.

Recently celebrated my birthday with my husband......worth the drive from Kingston, ON. Prior to moving east, we had many wonderful dinners with our children, friends and colleagues @ le papillon. The location is warm & welcoming. Each time I am there I order the same menu items and it never disappoints!!!! It is our restaurant of choice in Toronto!

We have eaten here dozens times over the years, including last Wednesday. Never disappointed. Attentive service, pleasant atmosphere, and good food. Only improvement could be the wine list, which is not very comprehensive, but it is good enough. Will definitely be coming back!

Four of us went for dinner on a Saturday evening with a voucher from Travelzoo. We were treated as valued customers, which is not always the case when using a voucher at other restaurants. Everything was delicious and our server, Marie was absolutely delightful. We will definitely be back!

Escargot was barely warm as was the crepe we ordered. The room was filled with smoke like something in the kitchen was burning. With all the great choices to dine in Toronto, we will not be back.

Have been customers for over forty years. Two of us had tried and true favourites French onion soup and Crepe St Laurent ( formerly Crepe Jacqueline). Both were not up to usual standards. The soup was watery and did not have its usual taste. The crepe was soggy and the bacon was very different...very very salty and a strange consistency. Either the chef was new to the restaurant and didn't know the recipes, or someone decided to "tweak"the recipes with a change in ingredients, we did not enjoy either dishes, unfortunately.

Excellent service; French Onion soup as a starter was the best I've had in a long time; four different entrees, all were delicious; my steak was perfectly cooked and the frites were fantastic! Two couples with a great bottle of wine, coffee & dessert for barely $200 - truly excellent value for the quality of food and service!

We loved our Valentine dinner, as expected. One of the greatest things in a restaurant is consistency, and as always, the food was incredible, the waitress, (Ashley?), was charming without being overbearing, informative and friendly. We love your restaurant. Please, while we know that growth and change are important to a restaurant, so is maintaining a consistent atmosphere and quality. You do both. Keep it up!

Love the feel of the place, but our waiter was a bit of a smart Alec and didn't really thank me for a 20 percent tip. Appetizer (salmon on a bed of avocado and black beans) was delicious, as was my wife's lamb. My main, prime rib, was a little fatty and served as a very (non French) huge slab. All in all good. Will return.
