From the quaint menu to quirky marketing, everything at Le Papillon on Front is done in house, and all staff lend a hand.

General manager Sean Gowland says the homemade rule goes a long way to not only keeping costs down, but also towards creating a positive, welcoming and inclusive environment for every walk of life. “We like to be able to cater to a lot of vibes,” says Sean. “We like to tip on the edge of trendy but there’s no 'I’m not hip enough to go there' or 'I’m too hip to go there.'”

Dishes like hearty French onion soup and tourtière – a traditional Québecois meat pie of seasoned veal, beef and pork with house chutney, potatoes and market vegetables – are comparable to what you’d be served at Grandma’s. The restaurant is stylishly impressive, yet stills feels homey, comfortable and relaxed.

Le Papillon on Front's eclectic team includes a few Francophone servers who help to give the restaurant its French-Canadian authenticity and also come in handy when Toronto classrooms come to learn the language and experience the cuisine. “It’s different being an independent restaurant,” says Sean. “We really do our best to make sure our customers leave happy.”

I can not beleive that no one else has written a review for the Le Papillion. It is my top choice for a restaurant if you want a romantic date atmosphere or a nice place to take your parents when the come to town. The serive is always great, the food is consistently great. The prices are quite reasonable. The crepes are always fresh and delicious, the salmon good, great French Onion soup. I also love the tarte au sucre (maple suger pie) for dessert- its the only place in Toronto that I know of that serves tarte au sucre. Great quebecois fare!

I had a seafood crepe which was delicious. It's a very pretty restaurant and our waiter was efficient and pleasant. We were going to an early show at the theatre and our food was timed perfectly. We started with a special salad of spinach and strawberries which was also delicious.

So it is change of season, but we found the temp in the room was too hot. While the meals were ok, this was balanced by extraordinary service from weelcome through our table person, who was wonderful, attentive and professional. Thank you.

A wonderful spot for lunch with a wide menu, something for everyone. Go at 1:00, after the bustle of the lunch crowd has thinned out. We were warmly greeted, and our server was attentive and friendly. The daily special crepe (chicken, broccoli and bechamel) was a little dry and the crabmeat sandwich special wasn't a favourite, but that shouldn't stop folks from dining at Papillon. There are great wines by the glass and we've had many memorable meals here.

It was lovely! We had a table for two in the front window, where it was quiet but lively. The food (French onion soup, grilled shrimp, steak frites and the amazing chomeur) was really wonderful. Front of house staff was super attentive and our server was delightful - just the right amount of engagement. Totally recommend!

Brunch this week on Sunday. I love the atmosphere but virtually had to insist as my brother didn't want to come here. Now I understand why! Service was fine until midway through the meal. Our server cleared everyone's plates but I'm a slow eater. She back again and asked if I was finished. I said not quite yet, I would pick at the frites but sknce she was there, I wanted to let her know (nicely) to be honest, the quiche was not very good -- way too much butter melted on top, cheese and bacon -- virtually no egg! She said I will get the kitchen to replace it or at least get you new frites. I said thank you but no I'm fine and nearly finished picking at the frites anyway. She teplied, "ok we'll take it off the bill at the end". I said "thanks that's appreciated but not necessary." When the bills came, I was quite surprised when the server interrupted our conversation to put her hand out, palm put as if to stop me talking to her. She said in a rather harsh and irritated manner, "ma'am, with all due respect, if you had let me take yours back to the kitchen, it would have been a lot easier for me to take it off the bill." I was so surprised to be spoken to like that, and reminded her that she offered and I said it was not necessary. We all looked at each other in surprise. My bill only came to $2.50 as it was just coffee so my friend took my bill and put it with hers. The server came back with the machine to pay and said I'll have to do two transactions for that. my friend suggested that maybe she could just enter the total of the two bills together? The server ROLLED HER EYES at my friend and HUMPHED away, leaving us waiting another few minutes until my brother finally asked the maitre d' if we could pay our bills. He commented to me that it felt like we were being punished and that the service was the same two weeks before when he was there with other people. The server was sweet as pie when she came back for us to pay, but it was too late. We are all from Nova Scotia and as nice and friendly as you can get! Disappointing conclusion to the meal. My family really liked their eggs benny with smoked salmon, and with avocado, but my quiche was horrible. Coffee was good. Gorgeous atmosphere. Real shame about the service.
