Meet the owner

Bloordale is home to Ransack The Universe, one of Toronto’s best-stocked vintage stores. You can find almost anything at this eclectic one-of-a-kind shop: records, local handmade crafts, jewellery, unique furniture and so much more. The distinctive store was formerly based out of a basement, but owner Jess Paehlke expanded it when he came across his ideal location.

“The name for the store came from a phrase in a novel,” says Jess. “The focus was originally to have mostly handmade arts and crafts, but the business evolved into so much more. We have vintage accessories, clothing, records and knickknacks; tons of eye-catching things you won't find just anywhere else."

Jess has always loved collecting things and his store name reflects the randomness of what can be found inside. Much like a department store, the focus here is not on any one particular area. When Jess travels, he’s on the hunt for funny, well-made and appealing items; if what he comes across meets any of these criteria, he’ll pick it up it to sell at the store.
