Located in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood, the longstanding Reliable Fish & Chips was named after Reliable Toy Company, which was opened in 1922 and still make toys to this day. For its part, Reliable Fish & Chips has been standing ground since 1930 and current owner George Hung has been serving generations of families’ delicious fish and chips since he got his hands on the establishment.
“I have customers who have been coming since they were children, and now they’re in their 50s and 60s,” says George. “They’ve been coming back because they know what to expect, the quality of food is memorable.”
Considered to be one of the best fish and chip shops in downtown Toronto, Reliable Fish & Chips serves up tasty and traditional food that doesn't disappoint. This old time favourite lives up to its name by providing reliably great fish and chips.Read the story of Reliable Halibut & Chips

a good place for fish and chips but limited seating =(
It's a take out restaurant. I ate the fish and fries combo. It was okay but fries were nothing special. The fish was pretty good but I don't know how fresh it was...
Food is good but the portions are not consistant in size. However, their coleslaw is excellent and highly recommended.
Fish was great. I thought the serving size could be a little larger. The bis surprise was the poutine! Real curds and real gravy. Pure delite. I'll be back for more.
The atmosphere is very small and crowed. Habibuts was small and taste was bland. You need to add salt and vingar. The chips was even badder. Incuding taxes - The meal was over $15.00. Not worth it considering the tiny halibut portion.
We've been visiting this place for years and love it. The batter is much better than other places and the service was friendly.
I have always loved this place. It is not the atmosphere that will make an impression, but the great quality food. Yum yum!
Generous portions, reasonable price, friendly service, and the salmon was unbelievable! Will definitely go back.
THIS PLACE IS FANTASTIC! Best fish and chips in a long, long time. Home style fries. Great drinks like Boylan root beer and ginger ale. Service is fast and friendly. You should stop eating other foods and switch exclusively to this! Seriously ... and no, I don't work for the company.
Fresh daily cut french fries - mmmmm Nice looking large fillets of fresh fish - your choice of halibut, haddock, cod, or salmon dunked lightly in a bowl of batter before thrown in the deep fryer - whoa there! Fantastic service - although i'm sure everyone has their "off" days - so people may or may not agree with me on that. Although it was amazing as take out I would suggest you eat IN so it's at it's freshest and crispiest!
Delicious! Appropraite price, friendly service and the best fish and chips in town!
Smaller portions than expected. Delightful counterstaff; waitstaff - not so delightful. Pleasant ambience and clean! Very disappointed that no coleslaw was available.
I came for good, simple, fish and chips ..and thats what I got ..good simple fish and chips. The place was busy ..so I had to wait ..no "heat lamps" here ..just fresh ..twice fried chips and fish with a nice light batter. The place is small so it gets busy fast
We thought we would check it out after seeing it on restaurant makeover. The impression from the show was that George was a bit arrogant, but we thought we would try anyway. All of the dishes from the makeover are gone (we went for the lobster rolls). The fish was rather bland and the chips were mediocre at best. Our impression of George for the show was accurate and we sat and waited while takeout orders were placed and filled maybe 4 or 5, while we were sitting with nothing. Feigning apology, when our food actually arrived, the fish was small and lacked any real taste. We will not visit again and encourage others to find one of the many better fish and chips places in Toronto.
The food itself & service were pretty good but the value for your dollar wasn't that great - it could have been just us but the portions were a bit small.
I saw the reviews on here and decided to check it out for myself. Turns out its absolutely delicious! I'm looking forward to returning and trying their wild pacific salmon.
Reliable is another long-standing restaurant specializing in fish and chips. The cozy restaurant features halibut, haddock and cod, wild pacific salmon, Nova Scotia scallops, breaded/coconut/jalapeno popcorn shrimp, fried clam strips, chicken fingers, and chowder, available for take out or dining in. The crispy light batter is flavourful, but never overwhelms the seafood, and the spray bottles for vinegar are so much fun to use (super soaker!), you'll never want to go back to using a regular bottle again.View this Smart List
Known by Leslieville folk for its delicious, super-sized portions and the smell of malt vinegar that permeates through its walls onto the street, this hidden gem is the go-to restaurant for busy, health-conscious families on a budget. An order of halibut (more fish than batter, deep fried in canola oil) with fresh-cut fries is just $12.99. Plus, with the quaint and clean mom-and-pop type interior, it’s the perfect casual space for a family dinner.View this Smart List
Reliable Halibut & Chips is praised by locals for the light batter used on its fish and the fresh cut fries. Choose from halibut, haddock, cod or basa fillets, and rest assured that their servings are generous.View this Smart List
