Meet the owner

Walking through the doors of Windergarden feels like stepping into a neighbour’s home. That’s the feeling owner Rose Marie Harasymowycz wanted to create in her neighbourhood furniture and home décor store.

The store’s main level features a selection of gift items, unique furniture and décor pieces, and a spacious back garden showcasing a dozen or so collections of patio furniture, while the downstairs showroom features living room and bedroom vignettes.

One thing is noticeable right away: all of the furniture is small scale, ideal for suiting the small, older homes in the area.

“Often when you go to furniture stores, it’s all oversized and overstuffed,” Rose Marie explains. She adds that this standard among most other stores makes furniture shopping difficult for homeowners in the Bloor West Village area whose narrow older homes simply aren’t suited to accommodate such large items. The furniture selection at Windergarden has been specifically chosen to match the unique homes in the area, as well as homeowners’ decorating style.

Rose Marie has watched the decor preferences of neighbourhood residents change since 2001, from very traditional to crossover contemporary-traditional with the arrival of younger families who seek to blend their sleek modern styles with the historical features of the area’s older homes. Rose Marie caters her furniture selections to suit this decor style.

At Windergarden, furniture is arranged in vignettes resembling the space limitations of the homes in the area, allowing customers to immediately envision the collection in their space. “We wanted to replicate that home feeling in the store,” says Rose Marie of the store’s layout. Even the patio furniture is small scale and arranged to suit the area’s small gardens.
