254 King St NN2J WaterlooSakura Island Japanese restaurant has a fantastic and very extensive menu offering all types of Japanese and Korean foods to suit even the most picky of guests. With their signature Sushi, Sashimi, Maki & Rolls, and so much more,
The best sushi in Waterloo.
They have real wasabi. They make sushi properly. Their fish always tastes fresh. Their non-sushi dishes are delicious as well.
If you're in Waterloo, and a fan of good sushi (not the stuff all-you-can-eat places serve), you have to try Sakura Island.
After reading the reviews I was a bit hesitant to try out this restaurant but luckily, it was a good experience.
Decor is stylish and modern and is vastly different than what the store's exterior suggests.
We were seated immediately and drinks were ordered while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Service was excellent as they kept on checking in to see if we were ready to order and we were not forgotten even though the restaurant is quite busy on a Thursday afternoon.
The food came out after 15 mins and was gorgeous. It tasted fresh and delicious and yes, a bit on the smaller size but I split some rolls between a friend and he was quite full by the end of it. The other two I came with ordered bentou boxes and they looked amazing; will be ordering those next time.
The salad it came with was very tangy but a bit too much apple for my taste.
The spicy salmon rolls had too much spicy mayo on it that was overwhelming.
Besides that the experience was overall quite good.
My daughter was off school and always chooses sushi if it is just the two of us. On a friends recommendation we tried Sakura and were pleased we did. Our food arrived quickly and was nice and fresh (as it should), service was prompt and efficient even in the busy lunch hours.
I've been to Sakura Island many times, and each time the food and the service is excellent. Their sushi always tastes fresh and generally makes a hearty meal with what appears to be complementary miso soup (I've never been charged for it...even if I don't order a combo).
The service is excellent - the servers are polite. I am generally greeted by the chef and/or a hostess when I enter.
For me, this is the best sushi restaurant in Waterloo :)
My boyfriend and I have been here many times, it is actually the first restaurant he had ever taken me too. I loved it and I have loved it ever since.
The service there is great. We have always had the same waitress and she is probably by far the best that has ever served us. She was always making sure we were ok and taken care of. Not to mention that the food is always wonderful.
I would go back and we keep going back, I am actually getting sone take out after work tonight lol.

I'm guessing something has drastically changed at Sakura since the past reviews were posted. I've gone maybe 8 times in the past 18 months and have not once had a bad experience. I've only gone for dinner once, as I'll admit that the place is expensive. But they've got the best sashimi in KW, and that makes it worth it for me.
The fish is always fresh (never frozen - you can tell) and comes in large portions when ordering sashimi or sushi. The rolls are delicious and the chef takes the extra time to make them visually appealing as well.
Atmosphere is very nice and the service is usually quite speedy. I try to get there a bit later (1-1:30) for lunch though, as it can be quite busy.
If you haven't been in a while (or were scared off by previous reviews), definitely give Sakura a shot. Yes it's expensive, but I haven't found higher quality anywhere else in town.

Food was reasonable though over-priced, even with the much cheaper lunch menu. I can't imagine paying their prices on the dinner menu. Service was horrible even though there was only one other party of two in the restaurant. I'm not prepared to pay those prices if I have to keep getting up to ask where the food is, again for our drinks and again for our bill. They must be joking.

The Sushi seemed smaller this time. I was still hungry after my regular order. We would have ordered more food but the Waitress never came by to check on us even once after our food arrived. Service was really bad. It was Friday night, place was busy and there was only one waitress! We were there for a celebration, but the lack of service kind of tainted it.
The reviews on this site are accurate. This restaurant it very pricey, and is not up to the quality you'd expect for what you'd pay.
What I mean is, the food is average at best, and they do try and make up for that by the decor. That part is great, I can also say that the tempura, and other appetizers are relatively nice.
The Sushi/Sashimi on the other hand is terrible. Really bad.

We are trying out the various Sushi places in KW looking for a decent Sashimi spot. Sashimi quality was great, got 10 pieces with the special. Miso soup and salad were good (no thousand island dressing, yay!). Great atmosphere with the best decor we've seen thus far. And the wasabi was potent, which is a good quality indicator I've found. Bit pricey, but hey, this isn't Toronto.
My spouse & I came for dinner in the late fall. The waitress handed us menus ... and then disappeared. After a too long wait, we finally got up and left without ordering or having anthing. The waitress did try to stop us from leaving when she saw us, but at that point we were hungry and unwilling to wait any longer. I've been there on business lunches and then the lunchtime staff seemed pretty diligent and the food respectable; but on this occassion for dinner the service was, unfortunately, poor.
The sushi is overpriced. After requesting that the spicy rolls be made with japanese mayo, they were made with a vinegar based hot sauce.
Although waterloo does lack choicof the in the sushi department, this does not excuse the poor quality of the staff, food, etc.
