Meet the owner

François Poitras was a student of literature when he decided to set up shop and open Boîte Noire. In those days, the only way to catch a good movie was on TV or to trek down to the cinema, and that's something François wanted to change. "Video cassettes put the cinema right at your fingertips, and that's what I wanted to give people," François states.

Indeed, it was the 80's, and VHS was making movies available to everyone at the push of a button. To get things rolling, François began scouring flea markets and second-hand shops, scooping up videos he found interesting, and soon, with the shop up and running, he began importing rare titles. Next, American blockbusters were added to the mix and the selection in the 700-square-foot space continued to grow.

Later the store would find a new home in its current location, a massive two-floor locale on Mount Royal Avenue with plenty of space for Boîte Noire's incredible selection of films. And even in an age when movies of every kind are just a few clicks away, Boîte Noire welcomes a constant flood of film lovers on the hunt for that next great watch.
