It might come as no surprise that a lifelong love of languages would culminate in the founding of one of Montreal’s most renowned language schools. Growing up in B.C., Yuriko Nadeau spoke English with her father and learned Japanese from her mother, and when the family moved to Montreal when she was six, French was added to the mix. After high school and college en français, she set out travelling and simply adored being able to communicate in foreign tongues. So when it was time to enter university, she headed straight to Bishop’s University to study languages. Degree in hand, Yuriko spent two years teaching English in Japan before she felt it was time for a bigger project.

In 1992, with funding secured from the Canadian Bureau for International Education, Yuriko set off to Ukraine with her father, sister and a staff of 10 volunteer teachers to run summer English programs. The courses were such a hit that soon the program would spread from Kiev to the western cities of Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and even to the beautiful Carpathian Mountains.

By 1993, and back in Montreal, Yuriko and her sister were ready to give their passion a permanent home, but felt there was one thing they’d need to do first: “She did a degree in business and I studied teaching,” Yuriko says. Yuriko completed a Bachelor’s degree in education with a specialization in teaching and in 1996, the two launched YNN language school (named for their initials), soon to become POINT3 Language Center.
