Edmonton spots with killer gluten-free desserts

It used to be that flour was a key ingredient in any dessert. Now, bakers have come up with myriad ways to make flour all but obsolete. Gluten-free desserts can be just as, if not tastier than their “regular” dessert counterparts. These restaurants have the most mouth-watering gluten-free desserts in Edmonton.

Kinnikinnick Foods Inc

1
10940 120 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 3P7

Every delicious dessert here is made in a dedicated gluten, wheat, dairy and nut-free facility. There is a range of packaged and fresh-baked goodies here, including cinnamon buns, muffins, cupcakes, tarts and doughnuts — it’s basically a celiac’s dream come true. Customers can order personalized cakes, and there is also a ton of extra seasonal goodies available during holidays. They even sell their own version of Oreos, along with other packaged gluten-free cookies.

Duchess Bake Shop

10720 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 0H1

The macarons here are maybe the best thing on the planet. The salted caramel flavour is so good it will make you believe in love, because that’s how strongly you will feel about them. This French bakery, named the best patisserie in Canada by the National Post, also serves gluten-free whipped meringues. You can buy the big ones or bags of the minis. The dark chocolate ones are so delightful that you won’t mind that you’re getting crumbs absolutely everywhere.

Cookie Love

10235 101 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 3G1

This cute little bakery serves up loads of – what else? – cookies! And many gluten-free ones at that, like the Cooper P-B-S’more! Cookie, which tastes just like an ooey-gooey, fresh-off-the-campfire s’more. For a gluten-free take on a classic, try the Chocolate Chipper, which is your basic chocolate chip cookie – but so good you can’t even tell it’s missing the gluten. And, if you’re sucker for miniature anything, they do have mini versions of a lot of their cookies, including the Cooper’s Peanut Butter Button.

Remedy Cafe

10310 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 1R2

Remedy kills it when it comes to gluten-free desserts. They once had a chocolate brownie that I fell in love with. I had it every day for a week, then it disappeared from the baking shelf (probably because I had just eaten all of their stock). It has yet to reappear but I know one day it will. In the meantime, there are gluten-free cupcakes and muffins, and gluten-free, raw cheesecakes to tease my taste buds, until I’m reunited with that brownie.

Crave Cookies & Cupcakes

5
1107 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary, AB T2N 3P2

Currently, Crave’s only gluten-free offerings are cupcakes, but a staff member told me that they’re working on perfecting a gluten-free cookie recipe before adding it to the menu. They offer red velvet and chocolate gluten-free cupcakes, as well as some seasonal varieties like pumpkin and gingerbread. The red velvet is fluffy, light and moist – three things that are difficult to achieve with gluten-free baking. The cream cheese icing is killer, and definitely elevates the cupcake from good to GET IN MY BELLY NOW!

In April 2016, Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards for the Best Pizza in the World: The Top 14 Cities for Pizza placed Edmonton at number eight on the list. With a diverse number of fantastic pizzas to choose from, including hand-tossed, wood-fired pies with white or red sauce and fun toppings ranging from pineapple to pine nuts, you're sure to find one you adore. Buon appetito!
