Lunch places on the west side of Edmonton

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but these west-end restaurants prove that lunch can be the tastiest. The west side of the city is home to a variety of restaurants with cuisine from around the world. Here are some of my favourites. [Image credit: iStock.com/tbrainina]

Rice Paper Vietnamese

1
10080 178 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 1S5

This Terra Losa restaurant has few frills but plenty of tasty options on their menu. Vietnamese options include noodle soups, pho and salad rolls. The restaurant’s namesake rice paper rolls come deconstructed with noodles, vegetables and meat that can all be hand rolled into a rice roll you soften yourself. It’s a fun and delicious experience.

Mikado Restaurant West

2
9942 170 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T5T 6G7

Mikado is a name that often comes up when Edmontonians discuss sushi. With three locations, one happens to be on the west end, and is an excellent choice for lunch with plenty of options of sushi, sashimi, rolls and other Japanese dishes. For those who would like a variety, the bento boxes are ideal.

Guru Fine Indian Cuisine

3
17021 100 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 1T9

This Indian restaurant serves traditional Indian fare, along with dishes with an Asian twist. Lunch entrees range from a traditional butter chicken or beef vindaloo to an adventurous Delhi vegetable burger. The lunch menu is always evolving and customers have the option of ordering from the dinner menu, as well, with popular items like the butter chicken samosas or Vishal’s Poutine.

Italian Centre Shop Ltd. - West End Edmonton

17010 90 Avenue Northwest, Edmonton, AB T5T 1L6

Entering Spinelli’s Bar Italia at the west end Italian Centre Shop during lunch time means a wait to order food, and a slim possibility of finding seating. But there’s a reason for that; the food is well worth the wait. Plenty of people in the area come for the coffee itself, not to mention the pizza specials, salads and pastas.

Kazoku Ramen Ltd

5
16518 100 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5P 4Y2

Kazoku Ramen is named after the Japanese word for family, because the owners say they only serve food that they would feel comfortable putting on the family dinner table. The restaurant has great lunch options alongside its ramen, including curry rice and rice bowls. But, you’d be remiss if you didn’t at least try one of the ramen dishes at one point – the Chili Gorma, for example, is a tasty blend of seasoned chopped pork, bamboo shoots, wood-ear fungus, toasted sesame and green onions.

Il Forno Ristorante

6
14981 Stony Plain Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T5P 4W1

This restaurant is right on the cusp of the west end, and offers excellent Italian food for lunch. The dishes are classic and delicious, ranging from lighter salad options or soup to heavier pasta plates. A linguini alfredo would be the ideal match with a salad filled with spinach, almonds and red onions.

Matcha is a Japanese full leaf tea that’s crushed into a potent caffeine and vitamin rich powder. In recent years, matcha has become not only popular as a drink, but as a flavour enhancer in various foods. It’s got a bitter kick that can be amazing on its own, and when blended with something sweet, creates a memorable balance. [Image credit:i Stock.com/Jordanlye]
For those who are tired of the same-old hamburger or chicken with your meal, there are plenty of interesting meats to choose from at restaurants around the city. Local meats like bison and elk can be satisfying or more exotic versions like alligator can pique the interest of your taste buds. [Image credit: iStock.com/nvelichko]
This fall, you’ll want to trade in sunny patios for warm restaurants with roaring fires. Here are several options to make the transition to the cooler weather a little cozier.
