Even if you’re not ringside, boxing is an awesome way to get into shape. Here's the boxing equipment you'll need to get started.

6 pieces of boxing equipment to punch your way to fitness

1. Punching bag

A punching bag is the basis for any boxing training. Weight, firmness and size vary from one bag to bag, depending on your training level and how you intend to use it.

You can suspend the bag by hooking it to a solid beam or a mounted wall bracket. If you don’t have an adequate place to hang a heavy bag, there are freestanding punching bag holders. A basement or garage is the perfect place to get set up.

Pound-for-pound, this will be your biggest investment, so choose a bag and hanger that suits your level of experience. If your goal is just to stay in shape, there’s no need to spend a fortune on high-end gear. However, if boxing is your passion, the right equipment is well worth the investment.

2. Jump rope

Never underestimate the benefits of jumping rope. It’s a rigorous and demanding cardio exercise, which increases muscle tone and overall endurance. In fact, jumping rope is so effective that it can be a standalone exercise you do at any time.

It’s worth spending a few extra dollars on a good quality jump rope. Designed specifically for training, jump ropes come in different cable sizes and weights, plus they have a longer life span.

3. Boxing speed bags

This pear-shaped bag is for serious boxers who want to improve their speed and dexterity. They are fun to play with, but if you’re only boxing to stay fit then a speed bag isn't really a necessity.

Like a punching bag, you can hang it from a ceiling hook or wall bracket.

4. Boxing gloves

Boxing gloves are essential and are not the same as workout gloves. You’ll need to find the right size for a comfortable fit. The good news is that boxing gloves are relatively inexpensive and you can usually find a decent pair for somewhere around $30.

5. Hand wraps and bandages

It’s crucial to protect your wrists and hands with bandages before putting on your gloves. Wrapping your hands makes training more enjoyable but more importantly it prevents injury.

6. Shoes and apparel

Basic training doesn’t require specialized shoes or clothing. A good pair of sneakers and comfortable gym clothes is all you’ll need.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on boxing equipment. The most expensive part will be the punching bag, but you can save money by purchasing a used one. All the other accessories you need are very affordable.

Not only does boxing provide you with an effective and comprehensive workout, it precludes you from having to go to the gym or from buying expensive fitness machines.
