How to grow the impressive passionflower

1. Herbal medecine

Parts used: the leaves

  • Passionflower is effective in cases of nervous tension and stress. It has a soothing effect on the mind and body; it is often prescribed for insomnia in adults and children, especially for difficulties falling asleep.
  • Results of clinical trials in humans have provided convincing evidence about the traditional use of passion flower to treat disorders related to anxiety.
  • Research has suggested that it could therefore be used as supportive therapy during detoxification in cases of drug addiction.
  • The relaxant and antispasmodic effects of passionflower may also be effective for digestive pain, headaches and neuralgia exacerbated by stress and tension.
  • Passionflower is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

2. In the kitchen

  • The seeds and pulp of ripe fruit have a tart taste and can be eaten raw, in fruit salads, or in creams, jams, jellies and fruit drinks.

3. Passion fruit syrup

For 8 people

  • Remove the pulp from eight passion fruits (180 millilitres or about 3/4 cup) with a spoon, and place it in a bowl.
  • Add five millilitres (one teaspoon) vanilla extract, 230 grams (1 1/4 cup) granulated sugar and 60 millilitres (1/4 cup) freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Mix well and pour into a bottle, seal and store in the fridge.
  • It can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Pour into a pitcher and add one litre (four cups) of iced sparkling water.
