How to get rid of blackheads without damaging your skin

August 4, 2014

If you woke up this morning and your chin was crowned by a very ugly acne achievement, make sure you don’t fiddle with this unattractive “guest”, better known as a blackhead—pushing and prodding will only aggravate the situation. You want to know how to get rid of blackheads the right way? Here is a little advice to help you get rid of them without leaving a trace!

Beware of permanent damage

If you have a lot of blackheads, it would be a good idea to consult a skin care expert at an esthetician’s salon. After all, you don’t want to damage your skin; permanent scarring can be an unfortunate side effect of too much squeezing. However, if you only have a few blackheads, you can eliminate them on your own.

Gentle treatment

If you’d like to learn how to get rid of blackheads on your own, you have two options available: you can simply use your fingers or you can use a blackhead extractor. In either case, gentleness is recommended in order to avoid damaging your skin. Cleanse and soften your skin before you start. A steam bath will open your pores and help you remove the blackheads. To do this, place your face above a bowl of hot water while covering your head with a towel.

Method 1: Using your fingers

First, wash your hands with soap. Roll a tissue around your index fingers to avoid causing any lesions with your fingernails. Place an index finger on either side of a blackhead and then press from bottom to top until the compacted sebum (the matter inside the blackhead) has been squeezed out. Follow up by cleaning and disinfecting your skin.

Method 2: Using a blackhead extractor

Place the extractor (which you can purchase at a drugstore cosmetics counter) over the blackhead and press down until the sebum has been completely removed. Follow up by cleaning and disinfecting your skin.

What is a blackhead?

Blackheads are caused by an excessive production of sebum, a fatty substance that helps lubricate the skin. When its production is excessive, especially during adolescence, the sebum can plug pores; it oxidizes and turns black when it comes into contact with air. The reason that blackheads appear most often on the forehead, nose and chin is that these areas of the face are well endowed with sebaceous glands, which produce sebum.

Preventing blackheads

Half the battle of blackheads is knowing how to prevent them. The first rule is to never go to bed without removing your makeup. Cleanse your skin morning and night. After cleaning your skin, sprinkle cold water on your face to tighten the pores. You can also learn more about skin care from your esthetician or cosmetics counter consultant; they will tell you which products are the best suited to your skin type and how to pamper yourself with a heavenly face treatment that will help you stay free of blackheads and other minor acne problems.
