The Joy of Dance

Theresa Tucci has always loved dance, but when she was growing up, her artistic desires made her feel like a social outsider. "Back then, in the '80s, being a quirky artist type was not something you wanted to be," she says. Today, at her adult dance and fitness studio, she makes sure that everyone who walks in feels welcome and experiences the joy of dance and feels the transformative power of rhythmic movement. Theresa's goal is to give both her students' bodies and mind a workout.

“Dance is very intimidating for people,” says Theresa. She makes sure her dance studio Free Spirit Dance is a non-judgmental space  where everyone instantly becomes part of the group. The warm studio offers registered and drop-in dance and fitness classes as well as dance coaching sessions for special events such as wedding first dances. "All my classes are designed to help people lose weight and have fun," she adds.

Fit and Fun

“It’s hard to get into shape when you’re not enjoying what you’re doing,” says Theresa. “I just want other people to be able to find freedom in themselves through movement, through that body, mind and soul connection."

Theresa notes that many people find the gym boring. This is why she created groove fitness, a class that combines resistance training with cardiovascular exercise to build strength. "I created a class where you are getting the gym benefits but mixing throughout with fun cardio groove, so that it's not overwhelming on the brain," she says.

To this end, Free Spirit dance classes include hip hop, Zumba and reggaeton, which is a Puerto Rican dance style that fuses a variety of Latin, hip hop and Jamaican dance hall moves. Further dance classes offered include Bollywood, barre fitness and much more.

Beauty, Inside Out

Aside from helping her students get fit, making them feel beautiful is an important part of Theresa's job and one that she finds satisfying. Men looking to join is on the fun can participate in the Sexy Chair Class, a class that teaches participants how to dance provocatively on and around a chair. It's the ideal class for men and women looking to strengthen their muscles and groove to a sexy dance routine.

Additionally, she offers a class entitled Burlesque and Wine Night Out, in which she invites women to enjoy a glass of vino and unleash their sensual side. The only women-only class the studio offers, these sessions allow women to feel confident and explore their inner goddess. They're great for a girls' night out, stagette or birthday party. "It's an actual night out, and girls come in posses," says Theresa with a laugh.

“Beauty is an inside-out job,” says Theresa. “Every woman wants to be feel beautiful and desired but not in a way that makes them an object,” she adds. Having conquered an eating disorder when she was younger, Theresa knows the value of helping her students creating a healthy sense of self. She finds this part of the job most gratifying. “I just want women to not have that struggle,” she says.
