Make a Big Catch With Experienced Fishing Guides

They say good things come to those who bait. Nobody knows it better than Trevor Hanson, owner of Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters. Located in downtown Calgary, the shop sees customers from around the area, such as professionals from neighbouring corporations.

“We teach people how to relax, get out of the office, go outdoors, and just have fun,” says Trevor. Besides gear for fly fishing, the store also offers a fly fishing boot camp, fishing trips, and guest rooms at their own River House “Trout Hotel” located on the Bow River.

Trevor describes Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters as a fly fishing store plus guiding service. “We have 10 boats, so we take people fishing in the river as well,” he says. In the summer, people come from all over the world, and Trevor or his staff take them to the Bow River to apply some skills and helpful tips.

Fishing the Bow River

On Sundays from April to October (excluding holiday weekends), Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters teach between 600 and 700 people to fly fish through its unique boot camp experience. “It’s a whole fly fishing package training: we go over the entomology, knots, etiquette, and casting,” Trevor says. “On that same day, we also go to the river and practise. It’s very hands-on.”

Opened by Trevor's father, Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters has been in business since 1979. Trevor took over in 1997 and his father still helps out a lot. “We still have our loyal customers from before, when my father was the only one running the shop,” says Trevor. “But now we have new ones, more customers who are interested in fly fishing.”

The summer months keep the shop busy with boot camps and fishing trips, and during the rest of the year, the retail side of Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters keeps bringing customers in. Trevor says his team also does charity work two or three times a year, inviting people in financial need to come to the ranch and learn how to fish.

Reeling In Success

Hanson’s Fishing Outfitters excels at attracting and retaining its customers. “You need to have the knowledge to run the business and treat people with respect,” Trevor says. “Give good service and they’ll be your customers forever.” He tries to motivate himself and his staff to make a conscious effort to show value to the people who visit them. “Do something out of your way for your customers, every day.”

As for the business, Trevor is positive that it will be here for a long while. “We are close to the mountain, close to the river. The industry is going strong and it’s going to stay strong.”
