Franks on Macleod

Sharable Bistro Fare

General manager Andrea Cintula says Tango Bistro was well ahead of its time when it opened in 2010 in the Smugglers Inn building just south of the intersection of Glenmore Trail and Macleod Trail Southeast. It was one of just three Calgary restaurants serving small-plate, tapas-style dining and the only one outside downtown.

In contrast to Smuggler's Inn, its dark and cozy sister restaurant, Tango Bistro is bright and contemporary. The room features lots of natural light, the woodgrain interior and furnishings are comfortably chic and the room offers a variety of banquette, table and central bar-side seating. Several large wine racks act as attractive displays of the bistro's vino selection.

The food is inspired by Spanish tapas, with contemporary cuisine twists. Dishes are meant to be shared, says Cintula. "It's a great way to eat. Plates come out as they are ready, and it's very social and very interactive." Small bites include wild boar bacon wrapped beef tenderloin, seared scallops and pear-and-gorgonzola flatbread. Also choose from a selection of porchetta poutine, salads, pastas and meat dishes that include pork belly gnocchi and coq au vin wings. Seafood options include tuna crudo and calamari vera cruz.

Lunch and Brunch

While Tango Bistro offers a three-course business lunch menu, and the focus is on getting people in and out in an hour, the service doesn't feel rushed. Options include a choice of soups to start, a sandwich such as chicken and brie or fontina grilled cheese as well as a side such as avocado and goat cheese  frisee salad or beet fries.

Tango Bistro also teams up with Smuggler's Inn for weekend brunch. Traditional brunch items such as eggs Benedict and made-to-order omelettes complement bistro options such as salmon cioppinno and charcuterie.

Sunday Dinners and Community Art Parties

Tango Bistro also serves family-style Sunday suppers. Naturally enough, it's popular with families. For a set price, diners enjoy a three-course meal that includes soup or salad and an entree that changes weekly, as well as dessert.

The bistro's walls feature the work of local visual artists on a three-month rotation. Each new showing features a launch party and community night that's open to the artist and their friends as well as the public. These fun evenings feature a live DJ and special menu.
