Teatro

A Special Downtown Restaurant

Situated in the regal old Toronto Dominian bank building across Stephen Avenue Walk from the Arts Commons complex, elegant Teatro is especially popular with theatregoing diners. Since opening in 1993,  the restaurant has worked to remain worthy of the regal historic building it calls home. Its balance of high-end service and welcoming comfort has made Teatro one of Calgary’s top fine-dininig establishments for more than 20 years.

“There are a lot of little things that we are passionate about that I don’t think all other restaurants embrace,” says Karen Kho, service director for the Teatro Group, which also owns Cucina, Vendome Cafe, Ca’Puccini and a few other restaurants. “We embrace hospitality at its finest level and that charm and grace is something that a lot of restaurants lose when there’s more of a corporate feel to them. For us, it’s always been people first and that’s a big contribution to our success. It’s about providing memories instead of just meals.”

Simply the Best Ingredients

While Teatro’s opulent location and high-end dining experience draw patrons, it’s the restaurant’s food the keeps them coming back. Teatro has always employed particularly skilled chefs, and while the menu is heavily influenced by Italian traditions, it’s best described as Mediterranean-inspired. Entrees include rich pastas, creative West Coast fish dishes and meals built around cuts of the best locally produced meats. Kho says that the philosophy that guides Teatro’s menu is dedication to using simple, top-quality ingredients.

“We do special things like importing our own olive oil and the dried pasta we use, though we do make a lot of pasta in house,” Kho says. “It’s not just local, but is about sourcing out the best ingredients in their simplest forms. We don’t try to overcomplicate a great cut of beef. We showcase what we get at its finest and freshest and most wonderful while maintaining it’s truest form.”

An Experience in Eating

Which all makes Teatro more than a place to get something to eat. Kho says she knows that regular meals at the restaurant go beyond most people’s typical budgets, but she loves that guests choose it as their favourite place to splurge when they’re looking for an elevated dining experience.

“We do our very best to make sure people get what we consider to be a full Teatro experience, which is service, food and atmosphere. It’s all a full package for us,” she says. “It is a higher price tag and we want guests to feel like they’ve experienced it in its entirety from start to finish.”
