Professional Comedy in Calgary

The space in which The Laugh Shop entertains has been hosting laughs since the 1980s. In 2008, it was bought and rebranded, but Matthew Wall stayed on as the manager and talent booker. Having been booking talent since 2000 in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, Matthew knows a hot act when he sees it.

“We host premier, marquee talent in an intimate setting,” Matthew says. “Professional comedians who love performing, especially in smaller venues where crowd involvement is possible.”

Matthew mentions how Drew Carry played to, and joked with, the back, middle and front of the crowd just because it was possible. “And some comedians like sticking around after the show," he notes, "to take pictures and sign autographs and just hang out with the crowd.”

Intimate and Comfortable Comedy Shows

One of the best comedy clubs in the country is also one of the most intimate for patrons and performers alike. While it only seats 300 people, the differences are huge when comparing The Laugh Shop to Saddledome or a theatre.

“For example, if you were to sit at the back of our comedy club, it would be the equivalent of sitting in the fourth row of the Saddledome,” Matthew says. “This is a huge difference because some performers love interaction with the crowd and have a greater ability and range with their jokes and participation.”

Because the city of Calgary is a cultural beacon for many popular acts, Matthew and his comedy club have to compete not only with other comedy clubs, but also with other forms of entertainment. “We have spectacular sports teams and we attract a lot of world class talent in Calgary," says Matthew. "So on any given weekend, we are competing with many places. But we have our niche, and we do it well.”

If it isn't an A-List comedian, the entertainer of the week is guaranteed to provide a professional performance that will leave the patrons in metaphorical stitches.

“We had Roseanne Barr in 2014, and she only made two stops that year,” Matthew says. “Here and at The Venetian in Vegas. The difference is that our tickets are half of what The Venetian charges and the atmosphere is a hundred times more intimate because the Vegas show seated 6000 people, compared to our 300.”

Eat and be Merry

Because of the smaller setting and age restrictions for tickets, comedians here do not have to censor their acts or stymie their style for the sake of younger ears. Another benefit at The Laugh Shop is that audience members are served food and beverages while enjoying the show. So you can enjoy a full meal with full bar service while Rob Schneider, Chris Tucker, Jim Belushi or any one of the Wayans Brothers time their jokes to make you exhale beer through your nose.
