Back to Basics, Back to Nature

When Cheryl Kasianiuk had her first child, she noticed a gap in the market for natural baby products, such as cloth diapers and breastfeeding supplies. After the birth of her second son, Bosom Babies was born in 2000. A self-described “mompreneur,” Cheryl’s store is truly a reflection of her personality and values. “I grew up on a farm just coveting nature,” says Cheryl. “I believe in going back to basics and having products that are as close to nature as possible.”

A large decorative tree adorned with stuffed animals sets the eco-friendly vibe of the store. Some of the most popular items at the store include the large selection of cloth diapers, baby carriers, breastfeeding supplies, wooden toys and bamboo clothing. “With the case of babies, being eco-friendly often saves you money, so it’s a win-win no matter what,” says Cheryl. For example, while cloth diapers have a larger cost upfront, they are durable and reusable and therefore save money in the long run over disposable diapers.

Don’t expect to find Barbie dolls, or plastic toys with flashy lights. “There’s an overstimulation of babies going on right now,” says Cheryl. “The toys with all the lights is something we don’t need …” She also supports having gender-neutral toys and clothing to allow children to grow up without traditional stereotypes imposed upon them.

There’s something about the pure bliss, pure spirit of a baby. To surround yourself with somebody that has no prejudice — it’s the ultimate day for me. - Cheryl Kasianiuk, owner

A Welcoming Community for Parents

While Bosom Babies has an online store for convenience, it is the physical storefront that Cheryl prefers. “We create community here,” she explains. “There is no substitute for meeting face-to-face.” With a multitude of products for both parent and tot to touch and explore, such as a colourful rack of pure-wool baby slippers, the store provides an inviting environment for shoppers.

Besides, Cheryl loves to meet her customers — especially the cute and cuddly ones she describes as, “precious souls.” Cheryl is also inspired by mothers who have gone through tough ordeals and yet manage to find the strength to tough it out.

One of the most rewarding parts of her job is just being around babies. “There’s something about the pure bliss, pure spirit of a baby. To surround yourself with somebody that has no prejudice — it’s the ultimate day for me.”

Sage Parenting Advice from an Earth Mama

Forget about reading countless books from so-called parenting experts. And perhaps ignore the opinions of well-meaning friends or family. Cheryl has some sound advice for new parents: “Trust your instincts. We need to go back to basics … and trust that you know the answers. If you trust your baby and trust yourself, all will be well.”

Cheryl lives in the area and often walks to Bosom Babies, as well as her second store, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, which she runs with her sisters. When she’s not working, you can find Cheryl communing with nature in Canmore. “There’s nothing I would rather do than be in nature with my family.”
