The Business of Crafting

Sitting at the desk in her studio, Krista Frattin, a Stampin’ Up independent demonstrator, reflects on the business she’s been building since 2007. When she thinks about it, she can hardly believe her good luck - truth be told, it’s not always easy to make a good living when you’re in the business of direct selling. It can be a lot of hard work with little return. But, despite the odds, Krista has managed to cultivate her passion for crafting and carve out a successful business that she runs from her home in north Edmonton.

Krista  explains that in the world of direct-selling, "sales takes work - feet to the pavement work. Even after being a consultant for years I am always thinking five steps ahead. How can I meet new customers, how can I generate excitement, what can I do differently to keep things fresh?"

Come Visit the Studio

It’s not a secret that Krista is entirely passionate about Stampin’ Up. In her large, bright studio decorated in a Pinterest-worthy style of shabby whites and Parisian design, you can take in pretty much every type of crafting supply Stampin’ Up has to offer. There are long tables lining one end the room, just waiting for the next group of crafters to come in and starting creating. The turnstile in the corner, filled with handmade greeting cards for sale, makes you do a double-take - it really is amazing what can be created with some paper, ink and a little imagination.

“I found Stampin' Up in 2003 and was instantly hooked," says Krista. "I love the coordinating colours, the textures, the high quality products, the art work of the stamps and paper … honestly, I love everything about it.”

Day after day, the studio is home to the creative process. Krista holds weekly classes where she teaches her customers of all different skill-levels how to put together scrapbook pages, paper art and cards. She uses this space to come up with ideas that she shares on her website - Stampin’ Dolce - and that she shares as a member of the larger, international Stampin’ Up team.

Mixing Business with Passion

Hopping out of her chair, Krista picks up some catalogues to stack onto a pile of brightly coloured paper. She goes on to explain that her business is, at its core, like many other traditional businesses - she has to manage her online presence, deal with paperwork, customer service and build relationships.

The part where she believes luck comes in centres around the successful balance she’s developed between working with her passion and building a sustainable business that she loves. “The most rewarding thing about my business is getting feed back about my design," says Krista. "I put my heart into my creations and it is rewarding when someone else loves them as much as I do.”
