Love at First Scrabble Tile

Board games have been a central part of life for John Engel and his wife Tracy. John even proposed to Tracy on a Scrabble board. “It took three hours, a bottle of wine and I had to cheat, but it was worth it,” says John. Their love of games and passion for business led them to opening up Mission Fun & Games in 1990.

At first Mission Fun & Games was a video game and movie rental store. Then, in 1993 when Magic: The Gathering was released, John and Tracy saw its potential and became one of the first stores in the area to carry it. The popularity of collectible card games and trading card games led them to move away from the movie rentals and video games and more heavily into board and card games.

By 1997 Mission Fun & Games had taken over a 2,400 sq. ft. former restaurant and converted it into an eye-catching castle. They now stock thousands of games and host tournaments and events throughout the year for the growing fan community. “We love to have customers storm the castle,” says John. “The former lounge of the restaurant is now our games room, and has a library of over 700 games.”

A Family Passion For Games

John opened Mission Fun & Games knowing eventually he and Tracy would have a family and he wanted the flexibility to stay at home with his kids. “Being home with the babies during the weekdays when major business problems arose at the store was often stressful,” says John. “But all these years later, my wife and both daughters are still a very integral part of the family business.”

John and Tracy passed down their passion for games to their daughters, both of whom competed at the Pokemon World Championships as kids. Now fully grown, both daughters still spend lots of time in the store helping out with the business. One of their main jobs is keeping the Mission Fun & Games website constantly updated with new arrivals, upcoming events and the latest news in the world of gaming.

The Latest Gaming Information at Your Fingertips

Keeping the website updated allows customers to be able to check stock and Mission Fun & Games’ online store allows players to buy new products immediately from the comfort of their home. But to get the full experience, fans of board games need to stop by the Mission Fun & Games castle in St. Albert and chat with the staff who love to share their passion for games and expertise on the many games they carry. It’s what sets them apart from other game stores. “That, and a cool-looking building helps too, I suppose,” says John.
