A New Mom's Love of Fitness

Soon after the birth of her first child, Ashley Giordano came across the Hot Mama Health & Fitness website and was intrigued. “I was three months post-partum,” says Ashley, who was thinking about opening up her own fitness training business at the time. “I decided to go with Hot Mama because a) I have a passion for fitness and for helping people and b) having my daughter with me where she can see these healthy role models struck a big chord in my heart.”

That is the special attraction with Hot Mama Health & Fitness. It is designed for mothers to have a place to work out and still bring their kids along. “I didn’t want to leave her at the gym daycares,” says Ashley. “I didn’t know the people and I didn’t feel comfortable. So, for me to bring her, and for other moms to bring their kids and be a part of the community, was important.”

It’s a Community

Taking part in a workout with women who are going through the same things in life helps create a special bond among Ashley’s clients at Hot Mama  Health & Fitness. “It doesn’t matter if you’re happy, grumpy, sad, sleep deprived or if somebody is having a tantrum, we all get it,” Ashley says. “There’s no judgement; we’ve all been there.”

Since opening in 2015, her clients have grown close and that’s led to long term friendships. “We’ve all become really good friends. A lot of the moms hang out after class. They plan get-togethers. They go to each other’s houses for dinner,” says Ashley. “A lot of moms have stayed since the first class. Once they come, they see the community aspect, they see my passion for the business and they feel like they are part of something.”

Taking Time for Yourself

In the winter, classes are held indoors, while there are varying outdoor locations in summer. Hot Mama Health & Fitness' website stays up-to-date with all of the class information. Ashley plans all the classes with a different focus and format, and with every fitness level in mind. She is always willing to change it up on the fly when a mom has to tend to her little one, though.

The important thing, for her, is to get moms out and active. “A lot of moms feel guilty when they try to take time for themselves. So, they don’t continue to be active after [they have a] baby because they feel guilty; they have no time or no energy,” she says. “When they can bring their kids, that guilt subsides because the kids are with them, so they don’t have to find a babysitter.”

Hot Mama Health & Fitness also offers the Post-partum Initiative, which consists of free classes to help new moms eight to 16 weeks post-partum get moving. “We believe in combating post-partum depression,” says Ashley. “If new moms need support or are having a bad day, we want them to come out instead of feeling like they are trapped in the house or have nowhere to turn. Other moms help lift your spirits. You get that rush of endorphins.”
