Riverway Golf Course & Driving Range

Burnaby’s Full-Service Golf Destination

When the Riverway Golf Course was opened more than 20 years ago, it filled a critical need for Lower Mainland golfers, particularly in South Burnaby where there was no other golf course at the time. In the two decades since, the course has undergone gradual improvements and renovations. Everything from a new clubhouse to improving the drainage to redoing all the sand bunkers has contributed to making Riverway a popular choice amongst golfers in the region.

“We are Burnaby’s full-service golf destination,” says Riverway Head Golf Professional Hal Eremko. “We have a championship course, driving range, eight Class A instructors and you can also enjoy a great post-golf meal at Mulligan’s or in the clubhouse restaurant.”

With all of these amenities, your day at Riverway could start with a bucket of balls on the driving range, a nutritious snack from Mulligan’s, a full 18 holes for one of the best-value green fees around — and then a great 19th hole and dinner in the clubhouse that overlooks the 18th green.

Happy Gilmore’s Favourite Driving Range, Michael J. Fox’s Favourite Course

The cult golf movie Happy Gilmore features Adam Sandler as an aspiring hockey player who takes up golf. Happy meets his coach Chubbs Peterson, played by Carl Weathers at the driving range and the two forge a great partnership. Did you know that those scenes were shot at Riverway’s driving range?

“You can hit a ball from the same stall where Happy hit it in the movie,” says Hal, adding that some putting green scenes shot for Happy Gilmore cannot be recreated because the new clubhouse now sits on that site.

But Riverway still remains famous each year because its favourite acting son, Michael J. Fox, hosts his sold-out golf tournament there every year, with proceeds going toward the theatre that bears his name at Burnaby South high school.

You never know who might be golfing at the same time as you because with so many local film and television productions in Vancouver, local actors have been known to take golf breaks at Riverway.

Helping to Grow the Game of Golf

While hosting celebrities is great, Riverway also takes its role in the community seriously. More than 1,500 Grade 10 students from six Burnaby high schools and one Vancouver high school use the course for their PE classes while thousands of Grade 5 students also have access to a free bucket of driving range balls with their BActive passes.

“These are some great programs that introduce young golfers to the game,” says Hal. “We also appeal to golfers of every age, as we have seniors and women coming to the driving range or to hit the course.”

Beginners or golfers who just want to work on lowering their score can find plenty of support at Riverway. With all of his instructors certified to the Class A level – the top accreditation they can earn – Hal’s team is happy to instruct every level of golfer.

Riverway is constantly working to improve the experience it offers to golfers of all levels. Recent upgrades have included a comprehensive drainage project that is paying huge dividends.

“With a course that drains so quickly, that means we can work on the course all year, even through the winter,” says Hal. “Not only are our conditions good through the winter and early spring, but the course is in great shape once the busy summer golf season starts.”
