A Passion for Books

Owning a bookstore was never part of Cindia Correia’s life plan. A mortgage broker by trade, she changed career paths before the ink was dry on her final exams after walking into The Creative Bookworm. Back then, the store was about to close, and Cindia decided she could save it. “I came into this bookstore; I remember thinking that I would love to own a bookstore,” Cindia recalls. “I have a passion for reading; I love the smell of bookstores, especially vintage and used bookstores. When I got home, I turned to my husband and asked him what he thought of me owning a bookstore. Initially, I thought I’d just get it back on its feet and sell it, but my passion has just grown and grown.”

Cindia set about updating the shop, organizing its shelves and turning it into the bookstore she had always imagined. The initial rearranging and updating took about eight months. That was followed by another eight months getting the entire inventory into a directory. “After I got the store, I spent a lot of time getting it ready,” Cindia says. “I stocked it with books I wanted, cleaned it all up, and rearranged it so it was better organized.”

Used Books, Gifts, Journals and More

Customers can peruse The Creative Bookworm’s 100,000-book inventory online or in the store. Those who prefer to shop online can reserve the book they want and stop by to pick it up later on. “We started using a program called Book Manager,” Cindia explains. “It’s a program that lets me have all my books inventoried so people can see all the books we have, both online and in the store. People are amazed by it, that they can come in or go online and see what we have and we know where it is, which also surprises a lot of people.”

The Creative Bookworm stocks discount, used, and rare books of any genre and period, from first editions by popular authors to the latest mystery paperbacks. “We’re always expanding and looking to add more things,” Cindia says. “We started a little gift section with high-quality journals; we have rare and vintage books for collectors; all sorts of things for anyone who loves to read or write.”

But the newest addition to the store is a café, where people can grab coffee and treats along with some new reads. “It’s a perfect little spot to read or hang out with friends,” Cindia says. “We’ve started booking it for book clubs as well, so they have a place to meet and have something to drink or eat.”
