Smoothies with a purpose

Braeden Ralla was always inspired by his late mother Devi Ralla’s determination, drive and amazing zest for life. “My mother ran marathons, she was a run leader and educational assistant, who helped hundreds of people achieve their health goals,” says Braeden. When his mother was diagnosed with cancer, her naturopath suggested she take some health supplements in pill form. Braeden decided his mother could handle them better if he put them in a smoothie.

Little did Braeden know that this was the beginning of Purpose Smoothie Co. Before long, he was researching how he could create nutritious, yet delicious smoothies for his mother. “Smoothies were a way for my mom to get all of the nutrients she needed quickly and in a tasty drink,” says the young entrepreneur.

Soon, family members were asking him to make them smoothies. “When we were on a family vacation in December 2015, that’s when I began to put a business plan together,” he notes. In 2016, after his mother passed away, Braeden’s father encouraged him to open a smoothie bar. He spent time developing and refining recipes, with lots of input from his family, before opening Purpose Smoothie Co. in June 2017. “The name Purpose comes from the inspiration my mom was to me … the way she lived a purpose-driven life,” he says.

Delicious and nutritious

Prior to opening his business, Braeden began by exploring protein powders. Because he has an egg allergy, Braeden went in search of a raw plant-based protein powder. With several options to choose from, he discovered that brown rice protein powders tend to be less chalky in texture than others, and can blend smoothly into any drink.  Also, most brown rice powders are hypoallergenic and completely dairy-free, and more importantly to Braeden, are easily digested by most. Purpose Smoothie Co.’s signature Berry Beet and The Stack smoothies both feature a sprouted and fermented whole grain brown rice protein.

The smoothies rotate, Braeden says. “Although we keep our standards on the menu, such as the Green Monster, which is great for detoxifying; we do introduce new flavours, depending on what fruits are in season,” he adds, also noting that he buys locally-sourced produce.

Because they’re blended, smoothies provide more nutrients than most of us could otherwise get in one sitting – a whole lot of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, there is no added sugar, preservatives or artificial flavours – so, these smoothies are pure goodness.

Rounding out the Purpose Smoothie Co. menu is an Acai bowl, steel cut oatmeal and his grandmother’s beloved Indian soups, which are always a hearty bowl of vegetarian, lentil and curry-based delight. “We sell out of the soup nearly every day,” adds Braeden.

Happy sipping

Nestled close to the waterfront in the historic Steveston village, the interior space of Purpose Smoothie Co. – designed by Braeden's sister – is modern, bright and airy. In the warm weather, health-conscious cyclists, runners and foodies can choose to sit at the small patio for four or at any one of the picnic tables overlooking the Fraser River.
