Coaching Every Aspect of Modern Golf

Matt Palsenbarg is no stranger to competitive golf, having won provincial and national titles and a reputation as one of the longest drivers in the country. But a decade ago, he turned his attention to teaching and coaching.

Now in partnership with Jason Glass, one of the world’s top GolfStrength and Conditioning coaches, Matt is the director of instruction at the Tour Performance LAB at Northview.

“I got into coaching because I wanted to give back to the game,” says Matt. “I love the great relationships you can forge with players and other coaches and it’s an honour to work with players who really want to improve their games.”

Also on the Tour Performance LAB team are: Chris Lutes, a junior golf superhero who works with Junior Labsters under the age of 13 and the regular youth LAB golfers aged 12 to 18; Lindsay Manion, who is a top golf performance coach with a passion for fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices; Nate Beauchamp and Daniel Naismith, who coach youngsters and adults of all ages; and John Shin, whose expertise is with tournament caliber players, as he has played on several top worldwide professional golf tours.

“We work on every aspect of a top golfer’s game, from nutrition and fitness to their mental well-being, course strategy and giving them every opportunity to play their best golf,” says Matt.

Let the Players Take the Credit

“Coach Matt” is beloved by all of his students because he’s always got a smile on his face and an encouraging word for every player. And when success comes, Coach Matt is happy to blend into the background.

“The players are doing all the work and a coach will never hit a shot or a putt for the player,” says Matt. “I love helping a player play their best without them knowing our team had anything to do with it. A coaching failure is not giving 100 per cent attention to the player. I also emphasize to my players that if you’re happy and in a great mood, you can do nothing wrong.”

Matt and his team are always learning new teaching techniques, attending provincial, national and international golf instruction symposiums, and interacting with other high-performance coaches to exchange ideas.

“The future of golf instruction is getting more educated and becoming more well-rounded,” notes Matt. “Just like what we’re building at the Tour Performance LAB, the future coach has a team of experts working on the total golfer and more than just the golf swing.”

Mixing Technology and Sweat Equity

Jason Glass and Lindsay Manion are leaders in the world of golf fitness, so participants in the LAB can expect to sweat a bit. The LAB specializes in training rotary athletes, biomechanics, physical assessments and functional strength training and Jason works with many world-class athletes, including professionals on the PGA Tour.

Matt also prides himself on investing in technology, such as FlightScope and K-Vest, which provide instant swing analysis, swing speeds and 3D golf alignment information.

“We operate Canada’s most complete Junior Development Program,” says Matt. “Our mission is to provide world-class instruction, coaching and training by instilling a strong work ethic, honesty, good sportsmanship, improved self-esteem, and physical fitness to our students. We also use these methods for serious adult golfers.”

If you’re looking for top-quality golf instruction from one of the friendliest coaching teams in the Lower Mainland, go into the Tour Performance LAB and you’ll see results pretty quickly.
