Some restaurants are popular for their ambiance. Others, for the crowds that they draw in. Many, still, retain customers thanks to the neighbourhood they dwell at. The best ones though, in my opinion, thrive and continue to do so for so long because of the essentials: good food and good company.

That’s exactly why Minerva’s has been in the heart of Kerrisdale for nearly 40 years. A family owned and run business, they serve up delicious, authentic, classic Greek food in a homey setting. No frills, no complications.

Nonda Pavlakis came from Greece at the age of 17 and started working as a bus boy. 8 years later, he bought Minerva’s and has been building up loyal clientele ever since. Nowadays, the spot is mostly run by his son, John. However, when he’s in town you’ll be sure to find him in the restaurant, still happily serving his devoted customers.

The menu initially began with just pizza and pastas, but over the years it has grown and gotten more extensive. “Everyone has favourites they come back to,” says John. As such, they’ve kept all of the old favourites while expanding to include dishes like slow braised oven roasted lamb shoulders, filet mignon, and baby back spareribs with a secret barbecue sauce.

Not surprisingly, Papou (grandpa) still comes into the kitchen of the family business each morning at 4am to prepare for the day.

With such a long, upstanding history, it’s not uncommon to regularly see two to three generations of a single family dining at this neighbourhood joint. And of course, each one feels right at home.
