Planting a seed

When cousins Erin Crowle and Kerstyn Edey were young, they both fondly remember spending hours in their grandparents’ gardens. “Our grandparents were very creative and their gardens were gorgeous,” says Erin.

After high school, Kerstyn went on to study photography and business, while Erin attended school in horticulture and landscape design. Their fields of study would soon prove to be the perfect business merger between two individual talents.

In 2007, a friend of the family asked if the two could do their wedding flowers. Word soon spread about their artistically stunning bouquets and before long, Erin and Kerstyn were asked to work on other wedding arrangements. “It really grew organically from there, although we both kept our day jobs for a few years,” explains Erin. “Then in 2012, we received a call from a bride-to-be who had a $15,000 flower budget.”

That was the pivotal moment when Erin and Kerstyn decided it was time to open a shop. The seed for Our Little Flower Company (OLFCO) was planted.

Perfect bouquets for all occasions

Just like you’d picture in a Parisian or English flower shop, OLFCO bursts with perfume, colour and a timeless style. In a busy corner in the Granville Island Market, their boutique shop is abuzz with activity. With stems and blooms sourced from local growers and suppliers, OLFCO creates striking arrangements that are, at times, dramatic or beautifully simple.

“Our flower bouquets really look like they're from the earth because we use high-end, unique flowers and lots of greenery,” Erin notes. “Each bouquet is handcrafted with lots of love and passion. We take the time to understand who our customer is and what they want.”

The bulk of their business is weddings – in the summer months it is anywhere from four to six weddings a week –  but they also do make online and corporate affairs sales. Whether it is a joyous occasion such as a wedding, birth or anniversary, or a somber event like a funeral, OLFCO will produce just the right bouquet or centerpiece. “Our bouquets are as individual as our customers,” she adds.

For the past few years, they have been sharing their passion for blooms with kids from preschool age up to grade two elementary students. “We go into classrooms with a mass of flowers and we help them design their own bouquets,” says Erin. “We go twice a year, for Mother’s Day and Christmas, and the kids love it.”

Freshness above all else

When Erin and Kerstyn opened their Granville Island shop in December 2016, they had custom-designed, state-of-the-art coolers installed to keep the flowers as fresh as possible. “They will keep flowers lasting days longer than the average cooler,” Erin notes.

Besides working with local growers, Erin and Kerstyn head to the wholesale auction weekly to select super fresh and the most beautiful seasonal offerings for OLFCO arrangements.

In addition to bouquets and centerpieces, they offer an array of dried flower arrangements, indoor tropical fauna and outdoor plants. At the end of the day, Erin says “it’s humbling to be part of life’s special moments and creating unique bouquets that allow the flowers to shine.”
