Collaborative Care For Optimal Mobility

As a self-professed mid-level runner, having trained for two marathons and five half marathons, Nick Lo knows first-hand what it's like to experience knee problems and running injuries.

It's no surprise then, as founder/director of Vancouver's Physio Room, that his team's biggest mission is to educate and empower people to take care of themselves, while providing individualized one-on-one physiotherapy sessions to help everybody keep active and achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Nick met his two business partners, co-owners Dara Storey and Deanna Bicego, at UBC, where they all graduated with a Masters in Physiotherapy in 2006. Individually, each worked at various clinics before Nick opened Physio Room's first location on Main Street in 2011. With the trio's like-minded philosophies tethered in collaboration, a second outpost on Oak Street followed in August 2015.

Our goal is to show patients something they can replicate outside of the clinic and become independent as soon as possible. - Nick Lo, founder/director

Hands-on Approach Therapies

Determined to make Physio Room a welcoming space, Nick culled aspects of what resonated with him from his work experience at several practices. "I wanted to make it approachable and accommodate the general population, not just cater to high-level athletes," he says. "I wanted it welcoming for everyone in Vancouver."

Cutting edge, top-of-the-line equipment is available at both locations, but as the profession has progressed, Nick explains the big shift in the industry, which has evolved to a minimal methodology. "It's more about the therapist teaching you and less about 'fancy' machines," he says. "Our goal is to show patients something they can replicate outside of the clinic and become independent as soon as possible; no one has this high-end equipment at home."

"There is so much education available to us, and although machines are still warranted, they're only one small part of our massive toolbox to help a patient," says Dara. "We might use two or three treatments — the more things we can offer, the more paths there are to getting patients better and helping them achieve their goals. We strive to deliver the highest quality collaborative care. We take time to listen, discuss and create an action plan. Your goals are our goals."

Physio Room's Main Street location is equipped with the latest treatment facilities and provides an array of services including: physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, intramuscular stimulation (IMS), and more.

Embracing Technology and Innovation

Physio Room therapists are all equally qualified, but each brings different experiences to the table. "It's our staff's job to cater each client to the proper therapist," Nick explains. "We're all comfortable treating any problem, but certain therapists are more experienced and certified in specific areas."

Case in point: Nick's running experience helped facilitate Own the Run package, launched in 2016, which will assist any runner, but is designed with the BMO Vancouver Marathon in mind. It includes an exercise program set-up, mid-training follow-up, and more, plus a Running Specific Screen that will measure all of your baselines and educate you on becoming a more efficient runner.

Physio Room also provides valuable online exercise programs. Therapists take pictures or videos of their client performing exercises (uploaded to your private file), which reveals correct form, number of reps, and other parameters. Dara stresses, "We want people to be aware of themselves, empower them to make the right choices and understand how and why they should be doing things that are best for their body."
