Italian Home Cooking

When Anna started the Trattoria in 2011, she was excited, but nervous. “I was scared,” she laughs. “Trust me, I was sitting by the window with tears in my eyes, and my kids were saying, ‘Ma, don’t worry, we’re going to be busy because we know your cooking is delicious.’”

It turns out, her kids were right. Anna's restaurant continued to build steadily, eventually becoming a destination in Vaughan for authentic Italian cuisine. Anna's family was a big part of that success, pitching in in all areas, working for free so money could go elsewhere, and supporting Anna in whatever ways they could.

It’s important, I think, to go some place where you know the people by their first name and they’re cheerful and happy to see you. And with that, I think you need really good food, which I think we have. It’s home cooked, it’s fresh. - Anna, owner

A Family Affair

“We always had passion for cooking,” says Anna of her family. “It’s all home cooking and we are very creative. I taught my son Frank how to cook and now he’s the chef.” By her account, Anna Maria Trattoria is more Anna's own home kitchen than it is a restaurant, albeit on a larger scale.

Cooking is, as Anna discovered, one of the simplest ways to form bonds with other people. When you enjoy what you eat, you enjoy who you’re eating it with. At Anna Maria Trattoria, Anna combines a family atmosphere with fresh ingredients and stellar cooking to help forge these bonds between and with her guests.

Family is important to Anna and to her restaurant. “It’s my family in the kitchen,” she explains, a note of pride entering her voice, “and then I have my daughter and my daughter-in-law in the front. I also have a grandson who comes on occasion from Calgary and helps in the front, so it’s all family.”

A Piece of Old-World Italy in Ontario

The welcoming décor, the delicious food, the family atmosphere – there is so much about Anna Maria Trattoria to like. It’s a little piece of old-world Italy in Ontario, where times are simpler and all that matters is a good meal cooked with love.

“It’s important, I think, to go some place where you know the people by their first name and they’re cheerful and happy to see you," says Anna. "And with that, I think you need really good food, which I think we have. It’s home cooked, it’s fresh."
