A Combination Dancewear and Women’s Activewear Store

Picking out the perfect dance outfit has never been more fun for moms than at this combination dancewear and activewear store. While twinkle toes is getting fitted for her ballet flats, mom can slip away and pick out a new outfit from the racks of trendy women’s activewear clothing lines on the opposite side of the store.

Footloose Dancewear & Apolline Activewear opened in 2010. Owner Joan Brachman has always loved fashion but got into dancewear thanks to her granddaughter, who is a dancer. When the neighbourhood’s dancewear store closed down, Joan recognized the demand from parents who hated having to go to downtown Toronto or Mississauga to purchase quality dance shoes and leotards. She decided to open her own store.

Outfitting Dancers from Head to Toe

Footloose offers a range of shoes, clothing and accessories for dancers of all ages, but what Joan is most famous for is her collection of bodysuits. “When I first got into dance, because I was in the fashion industry, I thought dancewear was really boring. It was really cookie-cutter, but over the years, I’ve been able to get those unique pieces – ones with lace, with leather, with feathers. Now I’m really excited because I can bring out that part of me that is really different,” says Joan. “I love the fashion side of dance.”

A Close-Knit Dance Community

With over 30 dance schools in the immediate area – from ethnic dance groups to ballet and jazz studios – Footloose Dancewear has become the place to go for a proper fitting. Most of Joan’s staff are dancers and all have been properly trained to fit dance shoes. “A dance shoe doesn’t fit like a regular shoe,” Joan says. “You don’t put a dance shoe on to grow into it.” While parents will often purchase running shoes one size larger than needed, Joan says dance shoes must be properly fitted to each child’s foot. “It’s an extension of their body,” she says. “Dance shoes stretch and grow and mold to your feet.”

Customers are encouraged to make an appointment to fit ballet pointe shoes, a process that takes about an hour. Joan and her staff will explain how the shoes should feel and select multiple brands and sizes to find the one that fits best.

Footloose works closely with the dance schools in the community and keeps a list of each one's requirements. Joan won’t sell pointe shoes to just anyone. “You come in and tell us who your teacher is,” she says, highlighting that dance shoes are not a toy.

Footloose keeps a complete history of every customer to allow them to provide the best service possible. “If a four-year-old has lost her ballet slipper, we can go into the computer, look it up and get what they need so they can get on their way quickly,” says Joan.
