A Passion for Cycling

“I like it steep, rocky, rooty, fast, cliff-edge, you name it," says Jorge, owner of Cyclepath Markham. "The more adrenalin the better! Some of my favourite rides, and some of the most dangerous I’ve ever done, are right in Toronto’s Don Valley. There are lots of trails in there that many people don’t know about.”

Born in Portugal, Jorge came to Toronto with his family when he was five years old, settling in the Bloor and Bathurst area of Toronto. At 13 he started his “professional” cycling career— delivering prescriptions for a drug store on what he describes as an "old clunker."

As a kid, he loved the speed of cycling, and marvelled at how far one could go under one’s own power, a fascination that continues in his work life today. His passion was there from the beginning. He’d ride all over the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, just to visit a bike shop he’d never been to before. On one of those visits, he was introduced to his first BMX bike. The rest, as they say, is history.

From BMXer to Business Owner

Young Jorge fell in love with everything BMX and soon, through breaking and fixing his own bike many times, he learned all about the sport and the bikes themselves, developing a reputation for his knowledge. That’s when he got his break. Because of his youthful expertise and enthusiasm he was offered a job at Bloor Cycle, one of Toronto’s oldest and most respected cycling shops.

“I was thrilled to work there. I learned so much about all bicycle repair, not just BMX, from some of the best mechanics out there,” Jorge explains. His skills grew, and when they eventually matched his passion, he opened his own place. That was 1991, and Cyclepath Markham has been a mainstay on Markham's Main St. ever since.

Whatever it Takes to Get You Back on Your Bike

There are many good reasons to visit Cyclepath Markham, including their top-notch customer service. “The bike shop is the spot that’s going to bail you out in an emergency," explains Jorge. "That’s what we do;.we’ll come in early, stay late and squeeze you in when we’re swamped. Whatever it takes. We won’t ever put your bike on the back burner and make you wait two weeks, like some shops do. We just do it. We’ll make sure you’re on your bike every day.”

This dedication is perhaps why so many of Cyclepath Markham’s customers trust Jorge. They come in and say, "Pretend it’s your bike, and do whatever it takes." And he does.

Jorge has also taught his two sons, Mathew and Philip, to repair bikes with his attention to detail and high-level work ethic. The two boys regularly work with their father in the shop and share his enthusiasm for both cycling and customer service.
